Bellingham Downplays Clash with Messi During World Cup Semi-Final

Jude Bellingham has downplayed the on-field exchange he had with Lionel Messi during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, asserting that the incident was merely a brief disagreement regarding a refereeing decision.

The Real Madrid midfielder was observed speaking animatedly with the Argentina captain during the 2-1 encounter, prompting extensive discussion as two of football’s prominent figures confronted each other on the sport’s grandest stage.

As Argentina prepared for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, focus shifted to the conversation between Bellingham and Messi, but the England international was eager to dismiss any implications of an ongoing confrontation.

Bellingham Reveals What Happened with Messi

Following England’s exit, Bellingham clarified that the exchange was rooted in differing views regarding a foul awarded in Argentina’s favor, rather than any personal disagreement.

“The chat with Messi? Actually, we were discussing a foul. It was nothing out of the ordinary.

I’m sure everyone will blow it out of proportion and make a big deal of it, but it was nothing,” he stated, as reported by AS.

Bellingham elaborated on how the back-and-forth unfolded as both players defended their viewpoints during the tense match.

“I thought there’d been a foul earlier and he said, ‘What about the one they committed on me?’ And I said, ‘You’re strong enough to take it,’ you know what I mean?”

While emotions were heightened during the semi-final, Bellingham maintained that such exchanges are typical during matches of that significance.

Bellingham Recognizes Messi’s Impact After Argentina’s Victory

Despite the disappointment over England’s exit, Bellingham readily acknowledged Messi’s influence on the game and the challenge of facing one of football’s greatest players.

“I’m on the losing side, which hurts a lot, but it’s a privilege to play against one of the best.”

The 23-year-old also shared that the missed opportunity to reach the World Cup final was among the most challenging moments of his career, offering an apology to England supporters after yet another painful near miss on the international stage.

“It’s so heartbreaking. I wanted to be part of the England team that finally pulled it off.

“Standing here telling the fans the same things they’ve probably been hearing for years and years is truly heartbreaking. I’m sorry,” he concluded.
