Barcelona Awaits Injury Update on Frenkie de Jong, Set to Receive FIFA Compensation

Barcelona is waiting for the final diagnosis on Frenkie de Jong’s knee injury, but if initial forecasts hold true, the club will soon begin receiving compensation from FIFA, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The Dutch midfielder is expected to undergo further medical tests before Barcelona issues an official statement.

However, early indications suggest the midfielder could be sidelined for around four months following a significant injury to his right knee during the World Cup.

Injury Sustained at the World Cup

Barcelona learned that De Jong played through pain during the latter stages of the Netherlands’ brief run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Dutch midfielder is understood to have received injections prior to both the Tunisia and Morocco matches and was seen wearing heavy strapping on his right knee.

In the Round of 32 defeat to Morocco, De Jong remained on the pitch until the 110th minute before being substituted.

The injury occurred while he was representing his country, which allows Barcelona to receive compensation under FIFA’s Club Protection Programme.

    Payments Begin on July 28

According to the report, Barcelona’s compensation will officially commence on July 28, exactly 28 days after the Netherlands’ final World Cup match.

FIFA regulations stipulate that clubs receive compensation when players are injured while on international duty, with payments starting after a 28-day waiting period.

This protection covers the duration from the player’s injury until they receive medical clearance to play again, provided the injury occurred during an official national team call-up.

    Around €2 Million for Barcelona

FIFA’s Club Protection Programme offers compensation of up to €20,548 per day, with payments capped at 365 days and a maximum of €7.5 million per player for a single injury. FIFA allocates up to €80 million annually for this programme.

If De Jong’s recovery aligns with the current estimate of approximately four months, Barcelona is poised to receive close to €2 million in compensation.

Based on the projected timeline, the payment would total around €1.95 million, assuming the midfielder returns to action in mid-November.

While financial compensation provides some relief, Barcelona’s primary concern remains De Jong’s recovery, with hopes that the midfielder can return before the end of the calendar year.
