Athletic Club Denies Barcelona’s Interest in Aymeric Laporte
Barcelona’s quest for defensive reinforcements has led to speculation regarding Aymeric Laporte as a potential target. The seasoned Spain international has been in the spotlight of Barcelona transfer discussions; however, Athletic Club has responded, clarifying that they have not had any contact with the Catalan club.
The transfer rumors surrounding Barcelona intensified during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Laporte showcased his abilities alongside Pau Cubarsi in Spain’s defense. His impressive performances, coupled with his experience and skills suited for a possession-oriented style, made him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s style, spurring reports that Barcelona might be interested in pursuing a deal.
Athletic Club Dismisses Barcelona Transfer Speculation
The growing interest in Laporte became a focal point in Barcelona’s summer recruitment strategy. Several reports suggested that the centre-back had been offered to Barcelona, presenting what was perceived as a favorable market opportunity.

Athletic Club’s sporting director Mikel Gonzalez stated that there has been no approach from Barcelona regarding Laporte. “We have not received any contact, nor any official or even unofficial offer from Barcelona’s board regarding the signing of Aymeric Laporte,” he said, as reported by SPORT.
Gonzalez further denied any claims of discussions between the two clubs. “At this moment, there are no negotiations of any kind between the two clubs, and everything being reported in the various media outlets is nothing more than rumours that bear no relation to reality.”
Athletic Club Insists Laporte is Staying
In addition to rejecting the rumors, Athletic Club emphasized that Laporte remains an integral part of their plans for the upcoming season.

The defender is viewed as a key leader within the squad, with the club highly valuing his experience and technical acumen. Despite the recent transfer news regarding Barcelona, Athletic Club has no interest in entertaining offers for the player.
“Laporte is one of the key players in the team’s plans for the new season, and we have great confidence in his technical ability and accumulated experience, so we have never considered letting him go.”
Gonzalez provided a definitive statement on the defender’s future: “Aymeric Laporte will remain with us and will not be leaving during the current summer transfer window, as we consider him a key player and an important part of the team,” he concluded.
