Focus Turns to 2030 World Cup as Argentina and Spain Prepare for Final

As Argentina and Spain gear up to determine who will claim the World Cup trophy, attention is already shifting toward the upcoming 2030 tournament.

Between now and the kick-off on June 8, 2030, several significant international soccer competitions will take place, including the Women’s World Cup next summer and the European Championships and Copa América in 2028. However, it’s prudent to look ahead to the world’s largest sporting event scheduled four years from now.

Where will the 2030 World Cup be held?

The 24th World Cup will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inaugural tournament, which Uruguay hosted in 1930, featuring 13 teams with the host nation emerging victorious. The United States secured third place in that tournament.

For the 2030 World Cup, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will serve as the primary hosts, while three matches will be played in South America in celebration of the centenary. Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, the venue for the 1930 final, along with Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Estadio Osvaldo Domínguez Dibb in Asunción, Paraguay, will host the opening games.

In Portugal, matches will be held in Lisbon and Porto. Morocco will have six host cities: Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, Agadir, Fez, and Tangier. Spain will see matches in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Zaragoza, Las Palmas, Valencia, and Vigo.

As host nations, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Portugal, and Spain will automatically qualify for the tournament.

When will the 2030 World Cup kick off?

Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the opening matches on June 8 and 9, 2030. FIFA will hold the opening ceremony on June 13-14, followed by the remainder of the schedule.

The final for the 2030 World Cup is scheduled for Sunday, July 21, 2030, at a location to be announced by FIFA.

Will the 2030 World Cup also feature 48 teams?

FIFA has yet to make an official announcement, but given the success of the 48-team format in 2026, a similar setup seems probable.

While a 48-team format is likely, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has mentioned exploring the possibility of expanding to a 64-team format for 2030, following a proposal from representatives of CONMEBOL.

    When will 2030 qualifying begin?

Each confederation will have its own qualifying format and criteria for entering the 2030 World Cup. UEFA plans a Champions League-style format, while CONCACAF, which includes the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to start its qualifying process in September 2027.
