Liverpool Secures Dominik Szoboszlai with Long-Term Contract Extension
Liverpool has taken a significant step in solidifying its midfield by securing Dominik Szoboszlai to a new long-term contract, effective before the 2026-27 season. This decision comes during a summer of renewal under manager Andoni Iraola, making Szoboszlai’s extension both a practical and symbolic move for the club.
There are players who energize a team and those who provide direction; Szoboszlai increasingly embodies both roles. Since joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, he has evolved from a gifted, high-tempo attacking midfielder into a pivotal player who can shape the pace of games.
Szoboszlai Contract Rewards Consistency
The Hungarian international enters his fourth season at Anfield with 147 appearances and 28 goals to his name, enjoying a growing sense of authority. His debut season culminated in a Carabao Cup victory, and he played a central role in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning squad during the 2024-25 season. Last year, despite a more challenging collective campaign, he achieved his strongest individual performance, scoring 13 goals and providing 12 assists across 53 matches.
These achievements led fans to vote him the men’s team’s Standard Chartered Player of the Season. However, statistics alone do not capture his true value. Szoboszlai’s ability to link different phases of play, support the press, and add clarity to attacks stands out prominently.
Liverpool Midfield Built Around Ambition
Szoboszlai expressed both gratitude and competitiveness in response to his new deal, stating, “It’s maybe my biggest day. There are a couple in front of it—probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three. Very happy. [I] can’t wait to go again and again and again. I’m just happy to be here, as I said many times.”

Szoboszlai shared his drive for improvement, saying, “There’s always more to come. I’m never happy. No, I’m happy with myself but I think I can do even better. I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.”
Andoni Iraola Inherits Key Liverpool Leader
For Iraola, this mentality is vital. Liverpool needs renewal and high standards, and Szoboszlai delivers both. At 25 years old, he is already a proven talent who is continuing to grow. “I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can,” he stated, reflecting his growing sense of responsibility.
His ambitions remain expansive. “When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.” With Szoboszlai’s future secured, Liverpool has made it clear they are equally prepared for the challenges ahead.
