Rangers Eye Sheffield United Forward Ryan Oné Amid Summer Transfer Rumors

Ben Jacobs shared a new update on his transfer feed, revealing that Rangers are interested in Sheffield United forward Ryan Oné. The 20-year-old Scot is drawing several teams’ attention this summer. Known for his physical presence, Oné’s current contract with the Blades is effective until June 2029, providing Chris Wilder and the United board significant leverage should any clubs make an offer.

Leicester City is also monitoring the young striker, although no formal offers have been made yet. It’s unclear whether the Foxes are considering a loan or a permanent transfer. Transfermarkt values him at around €900k, a relatively modest fee that reflects his inexperience at the top level. Chris Wilder aims to assess Oné during pre-season and has publicly expressed confidence in his potential to break into the first team this term, making a move to Ibrox complicated.

T4O View: Rangers and the Case for Signing Oné

Looking at the statistics reveals a promising player. He fits the profile of a modern target man—left-footed, tall, and strong enough to challenge experienced defenders. Last season, he was loaned to Lincoln City in January, where he delivered impressive results, scoring five goals and providing one assist in 16 League One matches. This translates to approximately 0.7 goals per ninety minutes, positioning him among the league’s top attackers.

However, context matters. Lincoln City had a successful season, winning the league, and Oné benefited from playing in a well-established, confident team, where veterans like Recco Hackett-Fairchild and Jack Moylan handled most of the pressure. He primarily played as an impact substitute, exploiting tired defenders rather than being relied upon from the start. His limited appearances for Sheffield United in the Championship have not yielded any goals or assists, resulting in an average 6.16 rating on FotMob, indicating he still has a lot to learn.

Pursuing Oné would not be financially burdensome. As a Scottish player with 11 caps and one goal for the under-21 team, he would aid compliance with squad registration rules. However, it’s important to consider what Rangers already possess sufficient forward options. Manager Derek McInnes has already secured Lawrence Shankland, and Youssef Chermiti remains despite strong interest from Lyon. Adding another young forward could overcrowd a position that doesn’t require immediate action.

A loan deal could be viable if the manager desires a physical option for tough away matches in the Premiership. Investing nearly €1million in an untested player in the Championship seems like a risk that Rangers might not need to take at this point, especially with pressing issues in the midfield. With Connor Barron’s future still uncertain, this area remains a more significant concern. McInnes has expressed his intent to secure players capable of making an immediate impact, and while Oné shows promise, he is still a developing talent. If the situation changes as August approaches and Rangers need reinforcements up front, they may reconsider. For now, priority lies in addressing other pressing needs.
