Juventus Considers David De Gea as Goalkeeping Backup

Juventus will consider a swoop for David De Gea if they fail in their bid to sign Emiliano Martinez this summer, according to Calciomercato.

The Bianconeri are looking for a goalkeeper to provide competition for Michel Di Gregorio, and while Martinez is their main target, there is no guarantee they will land him.

Juve need alternatives, and Fiorentina’s De Gea is an option for the club.

They believe he has the experience, personality, and leadership qualities that manager Luciano Spalletti wants.

De Gea kept 10 clean sheets in 37 Serie A appearances last season after 11 in his debut campaign, rolling back the years following a spell out of the game as a free agent.

His goals-prevented stat line last season was +1.06, up from 0.59 the previous campaign. The 35-year-old is still a competent goalkeeper and could do a job for the Old Lady.

The former Spain international played a key role in helping Fiorentina to avoid relegation after flying too close to the sun.

However, while De Gea has shown he can still perform at a high level, Juventus risk falling into a familiar trap by chasing another veteran instead of planning for the future.

The club should target a young, ambitious goalkeeper who can develop, push Di Gregorio for the No. 1 shirt, and eventually become a long-term solution.

Europe’s market is full of talented options with the potential to grow into elite keepers, yet Juventus continue to be linked with players approaching the end of their careers.

That short-term thinking has contributed to the squad deteriorating over the years.

De Gea would provide experience, but he is hardly a signing that moves the project forward.

If Juventus genuinely want to build a team capable of dominating Serie A and challenging in Europe again, investing in youth rather than another ageing star is surely the smarter path.
