AC Milan Seeks to Offload Rafael Leão Amid Aston Villa Interest

Italian giants AC Milan are actively trying to transfer Rafael Leão this summer. Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by Transfer Feed, indicate that San Siro management has identified Aston Villa as a suitable buyer due to their financial status. The asking price is estimated to be around €60 million, but Italian media suggest that Milan might agree to a deal for €50 million. This figure represents a significant decrease from the €175 million release clause that once applied to the winger.

Aston Villa Linked with Cut-Price Move for AC Milan Winger Rafael Leão

The connection between Villa and Milan is logical. Ongoing negotiations related to left-back Pervis Estupiñán have opened the door for discussions about Leão. Unai Emery is in urgent need of a wide player following Morgan Rogers’ imminent €130 million transfer to Stamford Bridge, leaving a substantial gap in the team’s attacking options.

Leão himself has expressed a desire to leave Milan, specifically seeking a move to England. He has dismissed opportunities in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Currently, Villa has not made an official offer, and talks are still in the early inquiry phase.

Offering €50 million or €60 million for a 27-year-old winger could be a risky decision. Last season, he produced just nine goals and three assists in 29 Serie A matches, averaging one goal every three games. Milan’s performance was also lackluster, finishing fifth in the league with Leão as a key player. However, his statistics show he surpassed his expected goals metric significantly and sprinted an impressive 366 meters per match. Despite this, his basic output is considered underwhelming for a player once regarded among the best globally.

His age is another important factor; Leão turns 27 this summer, meaning he lacks the potential for growth typically sought in young players. His form has been inconsistent, raising concerns about whether he is worth the high transfer fee and accompanying salary. Internal analysis by Milan highlighted troubling habits, such as holding onto the ball too long, failing to pass early, and showing frustration against physical defenders. Emery’s teams focus on tactical discipline and hard work, making it unlikely for an inconsistent player to fit into that environment.

Moreover, Leão seems to prioritize other Premier League options over Villa, viewing the club as a fallback. If this is the case, Emery might consider stepping back. Signing a player who perceives the club as a secondary choice can be detrimental. The squad recently celebrated winning the Europa League, making a commitment to positive energies essential as they prepare for a challenging Champions League campaign.

The funds from the Rogers transfer could be better utilized on other targets. Players like Alejandro Garnacho, who likely comes at a lower cost and is already familiar with the Premier League, or Crysencio Summerville, who offers youth and potential, present more viable options. Investing heavily in an inconsistent Serie A player whose best years may be behind him does not seem prudent. Emery excels at identifying hidden talents rather than chasing controversial transfers, making the Milan situation merely speculative noise.
