Following Spain’s commanding performances at the World Cup, which culminated in their eventual victory, the race for this year’s Ballon d’Or looks to feature a Spanish player prominently.

In the wake of Spain’s victory, reports have emerged highlighting Pau Cubarsi’s candidacy for the award, citing his outstanding defensive performances, which surpassed even Fabio Cannavaro’s efforts in 2006.

However, it appears that only two players have emerged as the top contenders for the Ballon d’Or among Spanish players.

Yamal and Rodri Favourites for the Ballon d’Or

According to AS, Lamine Yamal and Rodri are the two Spanish players leading the charge for the prestigious trophy, buoyed by Spain’s recent World Cup success.

Interestingly, Rodri himself previously predicted that Lamine would be a future winner of the award, stating during his own Ballon d’Or acceptance speech in 2024 that the Barcelona teenager would claim it “very soon” if he continued to strive for excellence. Now, two years later, the duo are direct competitors for the honor.

Lamine showcased a remarkable club season, netting 24 goals and providing 18 assists, helping Barcelona capture both LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup.

During the World Cup, he made significant contributions, scoring Spain’s opening goal against Saudi Arabia and finishing as the tournament’s top dribbler, with 45 successful maneuvers—almost double the tally of Lionel Messi.

He also played a key role in winning a crucial penalty against France, demonstrating impressive composure throughout the event.

Yamal faces tough competition from Rodri, who arguably delivered the finest individual performance of any player at the tournament, earning the MVP award.

Rodri topped the charts for touches, successful passes, and time spent in the opposition half, while serving as a linchpin of the best defense in World Cup history, with Spain conceding just one goal throughout the tournament.

Besides the two Spaniards, other names remain in contention, including Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe for their scoring feats, Michael Olise for his creativity, and Ousmane Dembele for his Champions League success.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi impressed with eight goals and four assists before tapering off in the final. As it stands, Rodri and Lamine are at the forefront of the race.
