There’s crashing back to Earth with a bang, and there’s whatever Hearts fans have been going through since 16 May.

As if losing out on their first league title in 60 years with moments left of the season wasn’t bad enough, they have been unceremoniously stripped for parts by Rangers.

Captain, head coach, and talisman all gone, in that order.

Soon though, it would be a new dawn, a new day, and a new man to throw their weight behind as they continue to try and upset the apple cart of Scottish football.

Wouter Vrancken arrived as head coach, seemingly a coup from the continent.

But in his first game in charge on Tuesday, Hearts were battered 4-0 by Sturm Graz and any hopes of Champions League progression have died off quicker than you can say Christian Borchgrevink.

But is there cause for optimism in the underlying stats of the Belgian coach’s first game in charge? After all, such data is Jamestown Analytics stock-in-trade…

Trio swap Tynecastle for Ibrox

It’s been a summer of loss, grief and rebirth at Tynecastle.

It started barely a week after the 3-1 loss to Celtic that will – if those who can remember 1986 can tell you – haunt for years to come.

Hearts could barely have lost three more influential figures from the previous campaign, and each departure provided a blow that stung more than the last.

First it was captain and top scorer Lawrence Shankland. “At least we’ll get a fee,” some optimists might have thought. Nah, not even that.

A clause in his three-year contract, only signed the summer prior, allowed him to walk away for nothing.

Then, as Scotland were about to kick off their first World Cup campaign in almost three decades, there was the news that head coach Derek McInnes was also on his way to Ibrox.

Okay, well, two boyhood Rangers fans. Perhaps it was to be expected.

But bad things come in threes, don’t they?

Social media whispers suggested talisman and fan favourite Cammy Devlin was on the cusp of signing a new contract in Gorgie.

A searing statement on X from the club’s official account soon ruled out a return. 24 hours later, he was holding up a royal blue shirt and beaming in front of the camera.

If the days of Hearts lagging behind the Old Firm in the league are gone, the days of them being pillaged by the big two in Glasgow are not.

Vrancken honeymoon lasts 60 minutes

Before Devlin had even departed, there was a new head coach in charge. The process to appoint Wouter Vrancken was quick and initial signs were promising.

Here was a man who had been named Belgian coach of the year, had taken Racing Genk to within minutes of the title, and had been linked with Anderlecht and Burnley.

As well as a glowing CV, his previous style of play in Belgium was highlighted. It was not quite labelled all-out attack, but it was certainly going to be the style of football fans want to see.

Explaining his tactics in an early supporter forum, the man himself said he wanted “chaos within a structure”.

In his first match in charge it was mostly chaos, not so much structure.

However, the 4-0 scoreline does not feel truly reflective of the game itself. The attacking stats showed Hearts did not lag behind their Austrian hosts by any means.

They created two chances in the first-half that should have been buried, but Pierre Landry Kabore shot straight at the keeper and Alexandros Kyziridis nudged his effort wide when one-on-one.

By the time it came to creating any more, they were already 4-0 down. Inefficient in attack, torn apart at the back. It was a nightmare beginning.

“Early impressions are that Hearts have got a really good head coach,” said Hearts Standard editor Joel Sked on a recent Scottish Football Podcast. “At the same time, just with everything that’s happened, there will have to be some patience.”

Patience is in short supply in football these days. For every Ange Postecolgou, there’s a Wilfried Nancy. For every Jens Berthel Askou, a Russell Martin.

It is too soon to tell in which camp Vrancken will fall, but for the most part, Hearts fans remain cautiously optimistic.

They’ve been through it all in the past two months, nothing can surprise them. Not even this.
