Arsenal Targets Two Centre-Backs to Replace Injured William Saliba

Arsenal Plans Significant Investment in Centre-Back Following Saliba’s Injury

Arsenal is preparing for a major investment in a centre-back position after William Saliba is expected to be sidelined long-term due to a major injury.

The French centre-back returned from the World Cup 2026 with a back injury. Although surgery is not required, he will likely be out for an extended period.

According to the Independent, the Gunners plan to actively pursue a new centre-back in the upcoming weeks, prepared to make a significant investment to bolster their depth at the position rather than opt for a loan signing.

While there are options available, such as Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Califiori, Jurrien Timber, Cristhian Mosquera, and Ben White, their own injury challenges and Mikel Arteta‘s preference for consistency in his full-backs have led to the decision to invest again in a centre-back this summer.

The Independent reports that targets under consideration include Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and John Stones, who is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.

The new signing will have the chance to partner with Gabriel Magalhaes as they start their Premier League title defense.

Additionally, Arsenal could receive substantial compensation from FIFA due to Saliba’s injury sustained during the World Cup. FIFA has indicated that “players can receive up to $7.5m (£5.6m) per incident, paid daily for a maximum of 365 days after the first 28 days of absence. Payments are based solely on the player’s fixed salary, excluding bonuses or other variable pay.”

Arsenal is also expected to invest in other areas, having recently missed out on Morgan Rogers after negotiation talks with Aston Villa fell through at £117m, allowing Chelsea to secure the England star.

In addition to a centre-back and a starting winger, Arsenal may seek to enhance their options in the wide positions following Leandro Trossard’s recent move to Besiktas.

The Gunners are set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16 in Cardiff before hosting Coventry on August 21 to kick off their league campaign.
