Athletic Club head coach Edin Terzic has addressed reports linking Aymeric Laporte with a move to FC Barcelona, suggesting the speculation is nothing new and drawing comparisons with last summer’s transfer saga surrounding Nico Williams.

Barcelona Keeping an Eye on Laporte

Laporte has recently emerged as one of the defenders Barcelona are monitoring as they look to strengthen their defense following his impressive performances for Spain during the World Cup alongside Pau Cubarsi.

The Blaugrana view the veteran defender as an attractive option for several reasons. The Spanish international offers valuable experience, is naturally left-footed, and is considered a financially attainable target, with his release clause said to be around €12.5 million.

During Deco’s recent trip to the United States, preliminary conversations took place with the player’s representatives, with both sides agreeing to revisit the situation after the conclusion of the World Cup.

    Terzic Addresses the Speculation

After Athletic’s friendly match against Sestao River, Terzic was asked about Barcelona’s reported interest in Laporte.

Rather than commenting directly on the transfer speculation, the coach suggested the situation was simply another version of a familiar story.

“I don’t think this is a new story, perhaps just with a different name. I’m looking forward to all of these players returning and starting work with us,” said Terzic, as quoted by SPORT.

His remarks echoed the transfer saga involving Barcelona and Nico Williams during the previous summer, when the winger was repeatedly linked with a move away from Athletic.

    Transfer Priorities for Barcelona

While Barcelona certainly admire Laporte a great deal and see him as a financially attainable target, his signing is not considered a priority as things stand.

The centre-back position is well-occupied currently with Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araujo.

Unless there is a departure from the ranks, the Blaugrana are unlikely to prioritise the signing of a new central defender.

For now, the utmost priority is being given to the signing of a new centre-forward as Julian Alvarez continues to be the top target.
