Celtic Eyes Dundee United’s Will Ferry as Left-Back Option

If a recent update from Courier Sport is true, Celtic are keeping close tabs on Will Ferry as they explore several options in their search for a new left-back. The club scouted him extensively over the past few months but has yet to make an official approach for the Dundee United star.

Born in England, the Republic of Ireland international progressed through the academy ranks of his hometown club Bury before joining Southampton. Although he was a regular for the Saints’ reserves, he was initially loaned out to Crawley Town in League Two, followed by a permanent move to League One club Cheltenham Town. Dundee United acquired him on a Bosman transfer in the summer of 2024, and the 25-year-old defender has since made consistent appearances, scoring four goals and assisting 14 times in 85 matches across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Ferry has turned down a move to Czechia, even after The Tangerines accepted a £1.7m bid earlier this month. They are closing in on signing Philippe Ndinga from Philadelphia Union, indicating that the Irishman’s exit may be imminent, given the interest from MLS and English Championship clubs, along with the Scottish champions.

Why He Would Be A Shrewd Signing For Celtic

The Hoops need a new left fullback after they failed to extend Marcelo Saracchi’s stay at Celtic Park. James Penrice, currently playing in Greece with AEK Athens, has also emerged as a potential summer target. However, Ferry could prove to be a more suitable option at a modest fee, especially with his contract at Tannadice Park set to expire in June 2027. United will likely aim for a profit rather than risk losing him for nothing next year, and his consistent performances may have caught the attention of Celtic representatives.

Ferry attracted attention last season with a stellar brace and an assist in a 3-0 victory over city rivals Dundee. He also contributed to a 2-0 home win against Celtic in March, showcasing his attacking flair, which has made a significant impact in Jim Goodwin’s 3-4-3 formation.

Celtic has Kieran Tierney, who rejoined his boyhood club last summer from Arsenal, as the preferred left-back. However, manager Martin O’Neill will need a quality understudy capable of stepping in for the Scotland international amid a busy schedule. Although Ferry may need to balance his attacking and defensive duties, his dynamic runs, cut-ins, and crosses align with the requirements of a modern fullback.
