Sunderland Manager Discusses Defeat, Early Season Challenges

Sunderland’s head coach, Regis Le Bris, addressed the media after his team’s recent match, emphasizing the need to improve despite having possession. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Le Bris acknowledged that his side struggled to break through the opposing team’s defense. “We tried, we created a few chances but we were not clinical enough,” he noted.

Reflecting on the early season dynamics, Le Bris accepted that mistakes can occur at this stage, especially after his team allowed the opposing side to capitalize on their errors, resulting in two goals against them. “It is often the case. It is not unusual. Today it was massive because of the consequences, but this is the Premier League; it is ruthless. We know every team we face has quality,” he remarked.

Le Bris highlighted the necessity for his team to elevate their performance levels in challenging situations. He recalled last season’s struggles and underscored that improvement is vital. “Winning is important, but it is also about the style of play. Our regret is more about us because we made those mistakes. It is what it is,” he stated.

The manager acknowledged a well-executed goal but expressed disappointment over the final result. “It is a process. In the Premier League, you have to master different phases. We will learn from this experience,” he said.

Sunderland’s history reveals that the team has only secured victory in one of their last nine Premier League opening matches, with their solitary win occurring against West Ham United last season. Additionally, following Nilson Angulo’s equalizer, Sunderland marked a milestone by becoming the first team since Chelsea in the 2021-22 season to score their first goal of a Premier League campaign via a direct free-kick.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, speaking to BBC MOTD: “We had the possession, but we had to find solutions to break their block. We tried, we created a few chances but we were not clinical enough.

“At the beginning of the season you can make mistakes, and they were really good at exploiting mistakes and scored twice.”

On early season rustiness: “It is often the case. It is not unusual. Today it was massive because of the consequences, but this is the Premier League, it is ruthless. We know every team we face has quality.

“We have to lift our level when we are in this situation. Last season we struggled with this at times, so it is something to improve.

“Winning is important, but it is also about the style of play. Our regret is more about us because we made those mistakes. It is what it is.

“Good goal, nice goal, but obviously we are still disappointed because of the defeat.

“It is a process. In the Premier League you have to master different phases. We will learn from this experience.”
