Spalletti: ‘Juventus Not Ready for Battle, Lost Duels Everywhere’

Headline: Spalletti Highlights Juventus’ Struggles Following Defeat to Genoa

Luciano Spalletti expressed his concerns about Juventus after their 2-0 defeat to Genoa, stating that the players “lost duels all over the place.” He emphasized a lack of fight and willingness to compete for the ball. “They must understand football has changed,” he added.

The loss puts additional pressure on Spalletti, with calls growing for his dismissal. Juventus entered the match in a precarious situation, and the defeat to a team fighting relegation has intensified scrutiny on the team’s performance.

In the match, Spalletti reverted to a two-striker formation in the second half, but by then, the team was already down due to goals from Kingsley Ehizibue and Tommaso Baldanzi. The closest Juventus came to scoring was a deflected free kick from Teun Koopmeiners that hit the crossbar in stoppage time.

Spalletti Concerned at Juventus Attitude

ITALY – OCTOBER 28: Luciano Spalletti, head coach of Juventus, looks on prior to kick-off in the Serie A match between Genoa CFC and Juventus FC at Stadio Luigi Ferraris on October 28, 2026, in Italy.

“We have to apologise to the fans for this performance, first and foremost,” Spalletti told DAZN Italia. He acknowledged the need for time to assess the situation, noting that defensive lapses contributed to the two goals conceded. Juventus had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize.

This defeat marks another regression in performance, reminiscent of their earlier 3-0 home loss to Lazio, with players seemingly hesitant to step up. “It’s difficult to accept the level of running and intensity of challenges, because we lost duels in attack and defense,” Spalletti confessed, urging the team to increase their physical effort and assertiveness.

Despite battling an injury crisis, the slow-paced nature of the Juventus squad is alarming, prompting Spalletti to question whether his players possess the necessary qualities. “We didn’t put in enough all over the pitch, and now we’ve got to see if these players even have what is needed,” he remarked.

He pointed out a lack of fighting spirit, a recurring issue this season, and stressed the need to improve in physical confrontations. “I want to watch this game back and understand better what happened, because in the last game three days ago, I saw a completely different attitude,” he noted.

Juventus will face a significant challenge next as they prepare to meet Napoli, where both teams currently sit on 14 points. Reflecting on the upcoming match, Spalletti conveyed the emotional significance, stating that he holds a deep affection for the city and its people.

When asked about his concerns after nine rounds of Serie A and inconsistent results in the Europa League, Spalletti revealed, “What worries me is that I am struggling to let the players understand football has changed.” He highlighted the importance of winning duels and adapting to the current demands of the game, despite the limitations in training time and resources.

Spalletti acknowledged the ongoing challenges in pushing the team forward and the urgency of achieving improvements without the luxury of time.
