Barcelona Focus on Defensive Reinforcements During January Transfer Window
Barcelona is preparing for a crucial January transfer window as the club seeks to bolster its defensive lineup. Recent injuries to key defenders Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Xavi Espart, and Andreas Christensen have highlighted a significant lack of depth in this critical area. Consequently, the club is anticipated to actively pursue new defensive signings.
Barcelona has already shown interest in Stuttgart centre-back Finn Jeltsch, suggesting that a fullback acquisition is also a possibility.
Laporta Targets Pedro Porro
According to reports from SPORT, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has pinpointed Spanish international Pedro Porro as a primary target for the upcoming window. The club has monitored Porro’s progress for some time and previously showed interest in acquiring him during the final stages of the last summer transfer window.
However, negotiations did not proceed as expected due to Tottenham’s hefty €60 million asking price. Furthermore, Porro is currently under a long-term contract with the North London club, which extends until 2031. Despite this, he remains receptive to a potential return to La Liga, pending a club meets Tottenham’s valuation.
Assessing Porro’s Fit at Barcelona
The potential signing of Pedro Porro could significantly enhance Barcelona’s defensive capabilities, particularly in the fullback position. Known for his balanced contributions in both attack and defence, Porro could represent an upgrade over current options like Garcia, freeing up coach Hansi Flick to utilize the former Manchester City player in different roles.
Porro brings considerable experience, having played in over 150 competitive matches for Tottenham. He has also earned 24 caps for the Spanish national team and participated in their World Cup victory over the summer.
Nonetheless, the financial implications of signing Porro raise concerns for Barcelona. The club may, however, explore alternative opportunities, such as the potential to sign Dodo on a free transfer next summer.
