Bruno Fernandes Remains Manchester United Captain Following Discussions with Michael Carrick
Bruno Fernandes has retained the captaincy of Manchester United after engaging in discussions with manager Michael Carrick. Following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como last week, Fernandes publicly criticized Carrick’s tactics and subsequently found himself excluded from the squad during Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. Carrick described his decision to bench Fernandes as a “pure football” choice, despite later substituting four other players during the match without calling upon the captain.
Despite this turbulent period, Carrick has confirmed that Fernandes remains in charge, dismissing any doubts by stating that he is an “important player” for the team. The manager appointed former captain Harry Maguire to wear the armband temporarily but emphasized that Fernandes will lead the team for their upcoming match against Chelsea.
Carrick expressed confidence in Fernandes, stating, “He’s fully committed to this football club, he’s fully committed to making things better.” He added that Fernandes has effectively led the team for many matchups and will continue to do so. Training reports earlier this week noted that Fernandes was “back to the best version of himself” and had a constructive one-on-one dialogue with Carrick.
The 32-year-old, who had been appointed captain by Erik ten Hag in 2023, had a stellar season last year, receiving the PFA Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year awards. However, he has not scored in the last seven matches.
Carrick, who faced scrutiny concerning his own job security amidst United’s eight-game winless streak, downplayed speculation regarding possible dismissal. Despite a series of heavy defeats, including the loss to Como and Bournemouth, club officials chose to grant Carrick another opportunity to reverse the team’s fortunes in the upcoming match against Chelsea.
Reflecting on the current state of the squad, Carrick noted their collective disappointment over the results. He assured fans, “The boys are hungry… there’s a disappointment, there’s a hunger to do better, for sure.”
