Gustavo Varela Earns First Senior Call-Up for Portugal Following 8 Goals With Monza

Gustavo Varela Earns Portugal Call-Up After Scoring Success at Monza

Monza striker Gustavo Varela has emerged as a standout player, netting eight goals in his first eight Serie A matches. Following his impressive performances, it is reported that Portugal will include him in their squad for upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.

The centre-forward made a significant move to newly-promoted Monza during the summer, transferring from Benfica B for €2.5 million, with potential add-ons of up to €1 million. He has certainly justified that investment, contributing not only eight goals in Serie A but also scoring two goals in his one appearance in the Coppa Italia.

According to reports from O Jogo, Varela has captured the attention of Portugal’s coach, Jorge Jesus, who expressed admiration for the young player’s form. It is noted that the 21-year-old has received confirmation of his inclusion in the squad for the Nations League fixtures set for November 14 against Denmark and November 17 against Wales.

Having spent the previous season on loan at Gil Vicente, where he scored seven goals in 33 matches, Varela has exceeded that mark in a more competitive environment in Serie A. He has also showcased his talent at various youth levels for Portugal, including scoring four goals in seven appearances for the Under-21 team.
