Liverpool’s Taylor: “We Just Want to Score More Goals”

Liverpool’s Gareth Taylor Calls for Improved Goal Scoring Ahead of West Ham Clash

Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor emphasizes the need for his team to enhance their goal-scoring performance as they prepare for a Barclays Women’s Super League match against West Ham United this weekend.

In their first seven league games, the Reds have netted 12 goals, which Taylor acknowledges as a commendable tally. However, he highlights that the team has demonstrated strong attacking play and often controlled possession, urging them to convert more opportunities in the final third.

Reflecting on the team’s recent performances in a media briefing, Taylor stated that Liverpool aims to maximize their chances as they enter the attacking zone. “I’ve been impressed recently that despite a few frustrating results, we are heading in the right direction with our dominance of play,” he remarked. “We need to capitalize on our final third entries; we had double the entries against London City, and we are simply seeking a bit more effectiveness.”

He added, “Scoring two goals at home in St. Helens is acceptable, and our goalscoring output has seen improvement this season, which was expected given our possession. We just need to elevate our performance.”

Despite acknowledging limitations in attacking options due to injuries, Taylor remains optimistic about the team’s potential. “It’s a matter of various factors—individual decision-making and being strategically positioned to score,” he explained. “While I don’t see it as a huge issue, addressing it could greatly enhance our gameplay.” Taylor believes that the team recognizes the need for more goals relative to their offensive play and insists that if they can achieve this, their performance will significantly improve.

Currently placed tenth in the league, Taylor noted that the team could easily be in fourth or fifth place with a few favorable results but acknowledges that there is work to be done both on the pitch and off it.

Turning his attention to West Ham United, Taylor acknowledged that their upcoming opponents have also been unlucky in terms of securing points. He emphasized the importance of remaining alert to the threats posed by West Ham on counter-attacks. “West Ham are swift on the break and possess players who can capitalize on opportunities,” he said.

He cited their recent match against Brighton, where West Ham lost 3-0 despite outshooting their opponents, saying, “The fundamental statistic is the scoreline. In their recent game, they had 13 shots to Brighton’s eight. This pattern shows that they are a constant attacking threat, as witnessed in their only defeat of the season against London City.”

With players like Asseyi, Gago, Salmon, and Ueki returning, Taylor noted that West Ham is at full strength and poses a significant challenge. He also remarked on the consistency they have achieved under their current manager over the past year, which has allowed them to refine their tactical approach.

The match between Liverpool and West Ham United is set to kick off at 2pm this Sunday.
