Rangers Focus on Defensive Strength with Rising Star Olwethu Makhanya
Rangers are building their Scottish Premiership title campaign on a strong defensive foundation under manager Derek McInnes, although there are concerns regarding their attacking prowess. The team has conceded just nine goals in 11 league matches this season, but their offensive record of 19 goals trails significantly behind Celtic’s impressive 27 goals.
Since taking leadership in June, McInnes has led Rangers through a successful streak, including two consecutive victories against their Old Firm rivals. However, a recent 2-2 draw against Hearts on October 28 highlighted some inconsistencies in their performance, despite the commendable contributions from their young South African centre-back.
Olwethu Makhanya, a 22-year-old defender who joined from Philadelphia Union for approximately £3 million, has quickly become a standout player in Rangers’ restructured squad. His impressive early performances have validated the team’s investment in him. So far, Makhanya has made nine starts in the Premiership, achieving five clean sheets, making 62 recoveries, and completing 37 clearances, while maintaining an 85 percent passing accuracy. His defensive contributions are crucial to McInnes’ strategy, which emphasizes recovery of possession, effective defense, and ball advancement under pressure. Notably, Makhanya scored an equalizer in the dying moments against Hearts and was honored as the SPFL Player of the Month for September.
Pundit Tam McManus, a former Hibernian forward, has recognized Makhanya’s impact, labeling him a “Rolls Royce” defender and asserting he is “without a doubt the best defender in Scottish football.” McManus also mentioned that Rangers could command a significant fee for Makhanya if clubs show interest in him next summer.
Given Makhanya’s central role in McInnes’ long-term plans, Rangers are advised to resist any offers for the young defender. His current contract extends until 2030, which provides the club with a strong position during negotiations, removing the pressure to sell quickly.
In addition to Makhanya’s potential, Rangers face practical considerations as well. With John Souttar’s contract ending in 2027 and Ben Godfrey’s loan expiring next summer, the need for stability in the defensive unit is crucial, especially as they strive to close the competitive gap with Celtic. While a substantial offer could tempt Rangers’ board, the goal remains to strengthen the team rather than weaken it for immediate profit. Retaining Makhanya could not only bolster their defense but also enhance his development and market value, making it imperative to turn down offers unless an extraordinary bid is presented.
