Headline: Barcelona Players Express Concerns Over Recovery Protocols After Defeats
Barcelona recently faced defeats in the UEFA Champions League and La Liga against PSG and Real Madrid, marking the end of their perfect start to the season. Following the Clasico, manager Hansi Flick attributed the team’s subpar performance to a “lack of freshness.”
However, Xavi Hernandez Navarro of ARA reported that some players are questioning the length of time they spend in hotels between matches. The current schedule requires them to be away from their families for extended periods, with certain players reportedly unhappy about Flick’s insistence on hotel accommodations.
Barcelona Players Question Flick’s Approach to Recovery
These concerns became evident after Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Real Betis at Estadio de La Cartuja. Severe weather conditions prevented the squad from returning home that night. While the team captains preferred to wait at the airport in hopes of improved weather, Flick opted to keep the team in a hotel in Seville.
As a result, the players only managed to return to Barcelona the following day, just two days before their trip to Paris to face the reigning Ligue 1 and European champions. Flick believes that the disrupted schedule hampered their preparations for both PSG and Real Madrid.
To aid in recovery, Flick has enlisted the help of sleep consultant Anna West, who focuses on everything from room environments to screen usage. Despite these efforts, some players feel that spending time at home with their families is more beneficial than staying in hotels.
A Familiar Debate in the Barcelona Dressing Room
Interestingly, this issue is not a new one at Barcelona. Past captains such as Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez had previously advocated for reducing what they considered unnecessary hotel stays. Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique accommodated some of those requests, but Flick has adopted a more stringent approach.
Flick is known for his meticulous attention to detail, particularly regarding players’ sleep schedules. However, recovery encompasses more than just sleep; players often find mental relief by being at home with their families.
The challenge ahead for Flick is to strike a balance that maintains his high standards while also considering the players’ well-being. As Barcelona faces a busy schedule with upcoming matches against Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid, it remains unclear if there will be any changes to their recovery protocols in the coming weeks.
