Enzo Maresca Receives Strong Support as Manchester City Adjusts Post-Guardiola
Enzo Maresca has gained significant backing from Hugo Viana and his team in the transfer market following Pep Guardiola’s departure. It has now been four months since the Italian took over the challenging role at the north-west club, which many consider one of the toughest in football.
Guardiola enjoyed remarkable success during his ten years at the Etihad Stadium, securing 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, three FA Cup victories, and achieving the unprecedented Treble in 2023—the first by an English club since Manchester United in 1999.
Although Maresca contributed to the Treble-winning team as Guardiola’s assistant, this head coach position presents a unique set of challenges compared to his previous roles at Leicester City and Chelsea. Despite these challenges, Maresca has quickly upheld the club’s high standards, demonstrating an invaluable skill in fostering squad cohesion and creating a sense of togetherness that can often be overlooked.
Manchester City recently embarked on an eight-game winning streak before suffering a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. Following this setback, the team managed back-to-back wins but faced another challenge in their most recent outing.
Last weekend, City encountered a loss against Aston Villa away from home. Even though they triumphed over Villa in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, the match saw Brighton and Hove Albion look the stronger side, deserving more from the game.
Ahead of his side’s second clash with Brighton in just four days, Maresca expressed confidence about their direction: “We’re going in the right direction. After so many years, to change the manager and many players, it always takes time to compete again.” He further responded to whether his Manchester City squad is currently competitive, stating, “I think, at the moment, we are competing and we changed many players and changed manager. The good thing about the club is that I think we are competing in all competitions, and we know that it takes time, but at this moment we continue in the same way.”
A Positive Season Start for Manchester City Amidst Concerns of Potential Pitfalls
The beginning of the season has been quite promising for Manchester City, particularly highlighted by significant early tests against rivals like United, Liverpool, and PSG. Despite a loss to Luis Enrique’s squad, there were several positives in a much-improved second-half performance, along with clear areas that need focus during training.
The recent match against Aston Villa also illustrated this, as players Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma faced challenging outings due to avoidable mistakes. While Donnarumma was benched for the Carabao Cup victory over Brighton, he is expected to return to the starting lineup in the upcoming match, which will see several changes across the team.
Five players, including Erling Haaland and Elliot Anderson, were granted three days off to prepare for the weekend, where Maresca hopes to maintain the top position in the Premier League standings.
