Milan Overcomes Inter with 3-1 Victory in Derby della Madonnina
Diego Moreira played a pivotal role in AC Milan’s fourth consecutive win in the Derby della Madonnina, contributing a goal and assisting Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot to secure a 3-1 victory, marking Inter’s first defeat in Serie A this season.
The Rossoneri faced their first loss of the Serie A campaign just prior, losing here 4-2 to Bologna earlier this week. With Fikayo Tomori among several players sidelined, Milan welcomed back Adrien Rabiot, Mario Gila, and Diego Moreira for the match.
The Nerazzurri entered the match at the top of the table after securing two late wins against Fiorentina and Venezia. However, several key players including Lautaro Martinez, Luis Henrique, Curtis Jones, John Stones, and Benjamin Pavard were unavailable. Cristian Chivu opted for an unexpected 3-4-2-1 formation, featuring Andy Diouf and Petar Sucic in unaccustomed positions.
Milan had previously triumphed in their last three encounters with Inter without conceding a goal, maintaining an unbeaten streak against their city rivals since April 2024.
This match carried a special significance as it marked the first Derby della Madonnina since the Stadio Meazza celebrated its 100th anniversary, coinciding with the recent unveiling of plans for the new Generali Stadium, unveiled just 48 hours before the match.
It took less than four minutes for Milan to find the net, with Diego Moreira delivering a precise cross that allowed Pulisic to score with a header from six yards, directing it into the far bottom corner.
Milan doubled their advantage with a well-executed set play, as Moreira’s corner was cleverly played short to Rabiot, who found the net with a precise finish off the far post.
However, Inter responded quickly with Alessandro Bastoni finding the target from a corner executed by Manuel Akanji, marking his first goal in a Derby della Madonnina.
As the game progressed, Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan had to make several key saves, including deflecting a powerful shot from Hakan Calhanoglu and a stunning one-handed reaction save to deny Djed Spence.
Diego Moreira further solidified Milan’s lead by scoring a goal from a free kick that curled over the wall and into the net, catching the Inter goalkeeper unprepared.
Despite facing mounting pressure in the final twenty minutes, Inter struggled to create substantial scoring chances. A controversial penalty decision for handball was overturned upon VAR review, reaffirming that the ball had struck Mario Gila’s chest.
Final Score: Milan 3 – 1 Inter
Pulisic 4′ (M), Rabiot 10′ (M), Bastoni 22′ (I), Diego Moreira 43′ (M)
