Manchester City Suffers Back-to-Back Defeats Amidst Managerial Challenges
Manchester City faced their second consecutive defeat in the Premier League, falling 1-0 to Brighton at the Etihad Stadium. Under the management of Enzo Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola in June, the team has recorded three losses in their last six matches. Initially, Maresca had a winning streak of seven matches in charge.
The downturn began on October 14, with a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Although City bounced back with a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town and a 5-1 triumph against AEK Athens shortly after, a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on October 24 marked a significant shift in momentum. This defeat, fueled by two goals from Nicolas Jackson, ended their seven-match winning streak.
In a subsequent match, City drew 2-2 with Brighton in the Carabao Cup, eventually losing 4-3 on penalties. Brighton’s decisive 11th-minute goal from Yasin Ayari solidified their victory, marking their first league win at the Etihad, and handing City back-to-back league defeats for the first time since August 2025.
These matches unfold amidst an independent commission’s ruling of a guilty verdict on 114 of 115 charges against Manchester City, with the club having lodged a comprehensive appeal earlier in October.
Maresca expressed disappointment after the Brighton match, stating that no one within the club was happy with the result. He acknowledged the need for improvement and emphasized the importance of moving forward to secure future victories.
This defeat not only affected City’s standing but also allowed Arsenal to climb to the top of the Premier League table, pending their upcoming match against Liverpool. Maresca noted a familiar feeling of disappointment similar to after the Aston Villa loss, commenting on the team’s performance and the missed opportunities to earn points despite creating enough chances.
Brighton, on the other hand, enjoyed their sixth clean sheet of the season, placing them just two points behind the league leaders.
Manchester City now prepares for an upcoming fixture against RB Leipzig in the Champions League before taking on Nottingham Forest in the Premier League as the November international break approaches.
