Manchester City Suffers Second Straight Defeat Against Brighton
Manchester City faced a disappointing setback on Saturday as they suffered their second consecutive loss in the Premier League, this time at the hands of Brighton. Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute following a quick free-kick taken by Lewis Dunk, marking Brighton’s first away victory over City in their 18 meetings.
This defeat follows City’s recent success in the Carabao Cup, where they triumphed over Fabian Hürzeler’s team in a penalty shootout just three days prior. The loss also ended a remarkable streak of 24 Premier League matches in which Manchester City had consistently found the back of the net.
In the match, manager Enzo Maresca opted to start Ayyoub Bouaddi, Enzo Fernandez, and Elliot Anderson in midfield, a decision that came a week after Bouaddi remained on the bench during a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. During the post-match press conference, Maresca elaborated on his strategy.
“I expected a physical game,” he stated. “I analyzed and watched them play; they’re aggressive, man-to-man. I think it was a good idea to start with three physical midfielders.”
Maresca also discussed the potential for substitutions, indicating that he planned to refresh the team’s energy in the later stages of the game with players like Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden.
In a subsequent interview with BBC Sport, Maresca praised his squad’s depth. “We have so many good players; I’m very lucky that I can try different things, and I think all of them were good today,” he remarked.
As the match progressed, Rayan Cherki replaced Bouaddi in the second half and created scoring opportunities for Fernandez and Matheus Nunes. Meanwhile, Nico O’Reilly came on for Fernandez late in the game, and both Phil Foden and Allan Elias were also introduced from the bench.
City nearly equalized when Iliman Ndiaye’s powerful strike was kept out by Bart Verbruggen, aided by the post. O’Reilly then headed the rebound against the woodwork after Ndiaye failed to convert from close range.
Brighton’s defense continued to shine, achieving their sixth clean sheet of the season, the most for any Premier League side, with Dunk’s impressive blocks preventing Erling Haaland from scoring during a challenging match for the Norwegian striker.
After the match, Anderson shared that Maresca reminded the team that they “win and lose together.” He believed City had created enough chances to secure a win but conceded too early in the game.
Ayyoub Bouaddi joined Manchester City from Lille for £86 million in the closing weeks of the summer transfer window. Following his first start in Premier League play against Ipswich Town, Maresca expressed that the young player needed a supportive environment rather than the pressure of starting every match.
Fernandez and Anderson, whose combined transfer fee reached £241 million, had previously been favored in critical matches, with Anderson receiving three days off prior to starting against Brighton.
Nunes and Ndiaye, who missed the midweek cup tie, returned to the lineup, as Maresca indicated all players except for the injured Antoine Semenyo were available for selection.
The defeat now puts City at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference, with Hürzeler’s squad trailing by just two points. Arsenal could potentially leapfrog City by winning against Liverpool on Sunday.
Looking ahead, Manchester City will travel to face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night before taking on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground next weekend.
