Leeds United Pursues Free 29-Year-Old Defender: Is He the Right Fit for Farke?

Leeds United Eyeing Options for Left-Back Position Ahead of January Transfer Window

Leeds United are concentrating on solidifying their Premier League squad under the guidance of manager Daniel Farke, with impending contract decisions next summer likely influencing their recruitment strategy. As the winter transfer window approaches, the club needs to evaluate their left-back options and proactively explore potential signings to stay ahead of competitors.

Gabriel Gudmundsson has become a dependable option, making six appearances this season and contributing one assist. Conversely, Melvin Bard has seen limited action, playing only once, and his contract is set to expire in June 2027. This situation compels Leeds to investigate alternatives, as any new arrival must provide more than just backup.

Farke may require a left-back capable of reliable defensive work while also enhancing the team’s possession play and attacking transitions. Achieving this balance is crucial, especially if Bard departs next summer, as Leeds aims to strengthen their options without disrupting the current team structure.

Leeds United Pursuing Porto Defender Zaidu Sanusi

As reported by Sport Witness, Leeds United are maintaining their interest in Porto’s left-back Zaidu Sanusi, a player they previously considered signing after their promotion in 2025. The 29-year-old Nigerian is eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs starting in January, as his current contract is set to expire next summer.

Porto’s manager, Francesco Farioli, is keen to keep Sanusi and has urged the club to secure a contract extension. Speaking on their ongoing talks, Farioli expressed confidence in the player’s abilities and highlighted his valuable contributions, even while noting that January is still some time away.

Sanusi has made eight appearances this season, including five matches in the Primeira Liga. He has started four league games, played 376 minutes, boasted an 84% passing accuracy, completed 15 clearances, and won 63.2% of his defensive duels. While these statistics reveal his defensive capabilities, they provide limited insight into his ability to enhance Leeds’ possession game.

Evaluating a Potential Free Transfer for Sanusi

Leeds United could benefit from a pre-contract agreement with Sanusi, which would eliminate a transfer fee but still involve considerations regarding wages and signing costs. The defender’s experience and pace could bolster their defensive lineup, particularly if Bard exits next summer.

Nonetheless, the club must evaluate Sanusi’s technical suitability before committing to a hefty salary. While he brings defensive prowess, Farke requires full-backs that can facilitate possession and create passing opportunities under pressure. His reported 76% passing accuracy in the Champions League raises concerns about his effectiveness in this aspect of the game, though that statistic alone cannot determine his overall fit within the team.

Leeds United should continue monitoring Sanusi while also exploring younger alternatives who may possess stronger attacking capabilities. If Porto cannot finalize a contract renewal, the availability of the Nigerian could present a valuable opportunity. However, a low transfer cost would not be advantageous if he is unable to perform consistently in Farke’s tactical system, or if his wages hinder other recruitment efforts.
