Inter Faces Concerns as Chivu and Senior Players Share Similar Sentiment Following Derby Loss

Inter Milan Players Raise Concerns Over Team Mentality After Derby Defeat

Inter Milan faces scrutiny following their 3-1 loss to city rivals AC Milan in the latest Derby della Madonnina, marking the team’s first Serie A defeat of the season. Players Cristian Chivu, Nicolò Barella, and Alessandro Bastoni voiced similar sentiments post-match, fueling worries about the squad’s mindset.

The defeat on Saturday ended a streak for Inter, who have not won a derby against Milan since April 2024, when they clinched their 20th Scudetto. Italian media has sharply criticized coach Chivu for his tactical decisions, but the concerns also stem from statements made by key players.

“We had the wrong approach,” Chivu remarked after the match. “It wasn’t all a waste, as we scored to make it 2-1 and had a chance to equalize, but we conceded a goal right before half-time.” He emphasized the need for a better mindset moving forward.

Barella reflected on the match’s outcome, stating, “It’s disappointing; we expected more. We need to improve our approach and determination, which has at times been lacking.”

Bastoni echoed these thoughts, describing the team’s mental approach as inadequate. “Inter must earn respect every day. I include everyone in this. I didn’t like the attitude at all,” he added.

Despite winning both the Scudetto and Coppa Italia last season, Inter’s current campaign appears more vulnerable. They have conceded 13 goals in ten league matches, the highest among the top ten teams, and have allowed the opening goal in eight of their 13 matches in all competitions this season.

A report by Gazzetta pointed out that Inter seems overly confident in their abilities, believing they can overcome deficits repeatedly throughout matches. This mentality was effective initially but has been exposed in their recent clash with Milan, highlighting underlying issues, particularly on the mental front under Chivu’s leadership.
