Headline: Newcastle Faces Key Decision on Joe Willock Amid Interest from Besiktas
Newcastle United’s inconsistent performance this autumn has laid bare the challenges of Matthias Jaissle’s high-pressing style. Currently sitting in eighth place after eight league matches with three wins, two draws, and three losses, the Magpies are under added pressure following a 3-1 defeat to Everton in the EFL Cup.
Jaissle is in need of midfielders who can press effectively, cover ground, and make timely runs into the box. Joe Willock is a player who brings energy to that role, particularly noted for his late runs into dangerous areas. The 27-year-old has played in nine of the team’s first eleven matches this season.
However, with Willock’s contract set to expire in June 2027, Newcastle finds itself at a crossroads, facing the necessity to make an important decision before he is eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs starting in January.
Besiktas Prepare to Renew Their Interest
According to a report from Jordan Cronin of the Shields Gazette, Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu revealed that Besiktas have reached an agreement on personal terms with Willock’s representatives and aim to pursue him again in the January transfer window. Besiktas President Serdal Adalı noted that the club had attempted to sign the midfielder over the summer when Newcastle set a £20 million price tag.
While an agreement with Willock’s camp is in place, it does not guarantee that both clubs have concurred on a transfer. Newcastle has not yet offered Willock a new contract, and Jaissle has publicly acknowledged his caliber. This season, Willock has already netted two goals in eight Premier League appearances, alongside one goal and one assist in three EFL Cup matches. These contributions bolster his case for a starting position, although Newcastle must carefully evaluate his contract situation moving forward.
Should Newcastle Sell Willock for £20 Million in January?
A potential £20 million offer would present Newcastle with a clear choice: secure funding now or risk allowing a valuable squad member to depart for free next summer. Selling becomes a more appealing option if Willock opts against signing a new deal, though the club should approach the potential transfer with caution, understanding that the full fee may not translate to pure profit.
Willock’s pressing and forward runs align with Jaissle’s tactical needs, making his departure mid-season a considerable setback. Losing an experienced option could hinder the team’s progress, particularly while younger players like Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur are still developing, and Lewis Miley’s role is being carefully managed.
Newcastle must ensure they can find a suitable replacement with similar energy and availability before deciding to let Willock go. With Tomás Amaral overseeing recruitment, the club is tasked with creating a succession plan before approving any transfer, as a hasty contractual decision could leave Jaissle with limited midfield options during a crucial stretch of the season.
