Everton Targets £33m Midfielder: Should Moyes Invest?

Everton Eyes Midfield Reinforcement with Potential Pape Gueye Signing

Everton has significantly revamped their midfield following the departure of Idrissa Gana Gueye, as manager David Moyes aims to create a more balanced squad. The team acquired Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for a reported £16.5 million and Christian Nørgaard from Arsenal for around £7 million. Additionally, Merlin Röhl joined from Freiburg for £17 million, enhancing the manager’s depth in central positions.

These new signings have bolstered Moyes’ options, though the team still faces challenges, having earned only 10 points from their first eight matches in the Premier League. Both James Garner and Hackney have made meaningful contributions, scoring during Everton’s recent 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle United. Their performances have provided a boost, yet the club still seeks a midfielder capable of shielding the defense, disrupting opposing attacks, and safeguarding the back four.

Garner, whose contract extends to 2030, remains a key figure in Moyes’ strategy, while Hackney represents a prospective long-term asset with his deal running until 2031. Nørgaard adds valuable experience to the squad, but his contract is set to expire in 2028. The introduction of a specialized defensive midfielder would enable Garner and Hackney to push further forward, without leaving the defense vulnerable during counterattacks.

According to Goodison News, which referenced the African outlet Africa Foot, Everton may renew their interest in Villarreal’s Pape Gueye in January. The 27-year-old Senegal international captured attention after the 2026 World Cup and has continued to impress in Spain, netting three goals in 10 La Liga appearances while also participating in the Champions League.

Reports indicate that Everton had initially considered a £23.3 million offer for Gueye during the summer, but Villarreal has placed a valuation of approximately £33.3 million on the midfielder. This price difference poses a significant choice for Angus Kinnear and the recruitment team.

From Everton’s perspective, agreeing to the additional £10 million could be beneficial. Gueye’s physicality and defensive skills would allow Garner and Hackney greater freedom in their attacking roles. His addition could enhance Hackney’s development without hindering his progress, providing necessary support in the midfield. Nonetheless, Everton should ensure that the fee reflects Gueye’s worth to the team, rather than merely satisfying Villarreal’s expectations.
