Atalanta Falls 0-3 to Parma as Gilardino Secures First Win

Parma Secures 3-0 Victory Over Atalanta in Shocking Serie A Upset

Parma claimed an unexpected 3-0 win against Atalanta, marking Alberto Gilardino’s first victory since taking charge. The match unfolded at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, where Giovanni Fabbian opened the scoring, followed by an own goal from Davide Zappacosta, and concluded with a strike from Simone Lontani.

Atalanta entered the match sitting 11th in Serie A with a tally of 11 points. The team had not tasted victory at home since defeating Venezia on October 12 and recently settled for a 2-2 draw against Fiorentina. The squad, grappling with an injury crisis, featured only 19 players. Key players such as Raoul Bellanova, Gianluca Scamacca, and Franck Kessié were absent, while Giorgio Scalvini returned to bolster the defense.

Parma, languishing in the bottom three with just five points after a goalless stalemate with Udinese, was keen for a turnaround. The team missed Adrián Bernabé due to a muscle issue, prompting Fabbian to start in midfield and Lontani to lead the attack alongside El Bilal Touré.

The home side dominated the early stages, enjoying 73% possession in the first half-hour. Charles De Ketelaere emerged as a significant threat, missing an early chance and forcing Parma goalkeeper Giovanni Daffara into a save. Other attempts from Ederson and Nikola Krstović also failed to find the target.

Parma’s first real opportunity surfaced during a set piece, with Enrico Delprato heading wide from a corner. However, they capitalized on their next chance when Vincent Sierro’s corner in the 41st minute found Fabbian, who headed home.

Just before halftime, Daffara made a crucial save, denying Nicola Zalewski’s effort.

After the break, the situation worsened for Atalanta as Zappacosta inadvertently directed a cross into his own net, doubling Parma’s lead. Jonathan Rowe squandered two chances to respond, and in the 58th minute, Fabbian assisted Lontani, who netted a beautiful shot from outside the box into the bottom corner.

Despite Sarri’s substitutions, including Eljif Elmas and Kamaldeen Sulemana, Daffara continued to thwart Atalanta’s efforts. He saved a low drive from Krstović and witnessed Mario Pašalić head a subsequent attempt against the crossbar. Krstović’s later efforts were also kept at bay as Parma maintained their clean sheet.

The match concluded with a scoreline of Atalanta 0, Parma 3, with goals from Fabbian, Zappacosta (own goal), and Lontani confirming a significant result for the visitors.
