Arteta Maximizes Rice’s Potential at Arsenal

Declan Rice Shines as Arsenal Tops Premier League

Declan Rice is garnering significant praise as he continues to establish himself as a key player for Arsenal this season. Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders the club has ever seen, the 27-year-old has made an immediate impact, helping the Gunners ascend to the top of the Premier League.

Rice was named player of the match during Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool on Sunday. So far this season, he has already notched five assists in the league—making him the top provider—and all his assists have come from open play, following a tactical shift introduced by manager Mikel Arteta.

Since his arrival at Arsenal in 2023, Rice has contributed to 55 goals through scoring and assisting, showcasing a valuable output that complements his high-energy playstyle.

At the start of the season, Arteta had a candid discussion with Rice, informing him that he would no longer be referred to as the club’s “lighthouse”—a nickname previously given by the manager. Arteta expressed that he expected even more from him this season.

“The way I’ve started this season is the position that suits me the most. I’ve played in eight, I’ve played six, I’ve played everywhere in midfield,” said Rice in an interview with Match of the Day. He acknowledged that his role has been clarified, and the manager’s expectations have motivated him to produce even greater results.

“This season I’ve really tried to attack that part going forward, trying to come up with assists, create chances,” Rice continued. He emphasized his versatility and commitment to whatever role the manager assigns him.

While Rice prefers to play consistently, competing in three games a week to maintain rhythm, last season’s heavy workload—55 matches for Arsenal along with a deep run in the World Cup—took a toll on him. This season, however, the signing of Bruno Guimaraes has granted him opportunities to rest, especially during the EFL Cup matches, and England’s management has also provided him a breather in the recent international break.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher praised Rice’s performance, calling him “world class” and stating, “He’s one of the best midfield players Arsenal have ever had.” Carragher believes Rice stands out as the top midfielder in the Premier League without any dispute.

What’s been happening this season?

Kai Havertz credited Rice with “90%” of his winning goal against Liverpool, highlighting the midfielder’s relentless energy and the quality of his assist. Opposition managers have noted how challenging Arsenal’s midfield is to defend against as it has seen more rotation this season.

While Rice has anchored the Arsenal midfield, the addition of Guimaraes and collaborations with Myles Lewis-Skelly have enabled him to venture further up the pitch. Rice has maintained a starting position in all Premier League and Champions League fixtures, contributing to Arsenal’s strong season launch.

Negotiations for a new contract have begun, with Arteta mentioning that Rice is eager to commit long-term to the club, indicating that a resolution is anticipated soon.
