Sheffield Wednesday Appoints Dave Challinor as New Manager
Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch has announced that Dave Challinor is the “unanimous choice” to lead the club into the future. Challinor was officially named the new Owls manager on Sunday, securing a three-and-a-half-year contract that will see him at the helm until 2030.
The 51-year-old former Stockport County manager arrives after guiding his previous team to the League One play-off final last summer. Notably, Challinor has achieved promotion at every club he has managed. He takes charge of a Wednesday team currently sitting ninth in League One, just two points shy of the playoff positions.
“Dave’s appointment has the unanimous support of our board, following a thorough recruitment process expertly led by Simon Wilson, and reflects our shared commitment to the long-term future of Sheffield Wednesday,” Storch expressed on the club’s website. “We are still at the beginning of an ambitious journey. Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the foundations of the club, but we recognize there is much more work ahead.”
Challinor will be supported by first-team assistant coaches Clint Hill and Antony Sweeney during his tenure. His first match in charge is set for Sunday in the FA Cup first-round tie against League Two’s Oldham Athletic at 17:15 GMT.
The new leadership follows the dismissal of Henrik Pedersen after consecutive defeats to Notts County and Doncaster Rovers. Matt Hamshaw served as interim manager for two games before the club decided to appoint Challinor.
Challinor reunites with Sporting Director Simon Wilson, with whom he has previously collaborated successfully at Stockport. Wilson is optimistic that Challinor’s presence will be instrumental in establishing a “recognizable playing identity and greater consistency,” steering the club away from a mere “short-term solution.”
“Dave’s record speaks for itself,” Wilson stated. “He is a proven winner who has consistently built successful teams, improved players, and demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve throughout his career. Dave sets exceptionally high standards and challenges everyone around him to improve. He has a proven ability to get more from individuals and teams, and that mentality is central to what we want to establish here.”
