Goalkeeper Speaks Out on ‘Enormous Pain’ Following Jesus de Miguel’s Death

Headline: Andorra Goalkeeper Jesus Owono Expresses Deep Grief Following Tragic Death of Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel

Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has spoken out about the “enormous pain” he feels and describes his current circumstances as “the most difficult days of my life” after the recent passing of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel.

De Miguel died in the hospital on Tuesday after an accidental incident with Owono during stoppage time of a Spanish second division match between their teams on Monday. The collision occurred as Owono attempted to clear the ball, resulting in him striking De Miguel in the chest with significant force, which led to the 30-year-old forward suffering a cardiac arrest.

In a statement released by Andorra on Wednesday, Owono expressed his struggles to find the right words and process the unfolding tragedy. “These are the most difficult days of my life,” he said. “I feel enormous pain at the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and all the people who loved him. I know there will be many issues to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I can’t think of anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus.”

In response to the tragedy, Tenerife announced six days of mourning. Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with a minute’s silence held before each Champions League match on Tuesday night, a practice that will continue for other UEFA fixtures throughout the week.

Police have initiated a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter related to the incident. However, criminal proceedings are said to be unlikely, as any death classified as non-natural under Spanish law automatically prompts a judicial inquiry.

Before deleting his Instagram account on Tuesday, Owono received support from Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz, who defended him, stating, “Those of us who know him know the type of person he is, how much he is suffering in these moments and that he would never intend to hurt anyone. In football, unfortunate incidents happen, but no-one could imagine that one of these could end in such tragic circumstances.”

Fans have gathered to pay their respects to De Miguel at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium, where a memorial service will take place on Saturday evening, open to supporters. Barcelona’s Raphinha, who scored during his team’s recent Champions League match, also honored De Miguel, saying, “Today I don’t want to talk about football, I want to send a message to the family of Jesus – may he rest in peace. From the club, I want to send a message of strength to the family.”
