Barcelona’s interest in Ruud Nijstad has gained momentum following comments from FC Twente’s technical director, Erik ten Hag, who confirmed that the Catalan club is one of several major European teams watching the 18-year-old defender closely.
Nijstad has quickly become one of the standout young centre-backs in Dutch football, attracting attention from Barcelona among other clubs. In addressing the growing interest in the player, Ten Hag noted that numerous top clubs have already made inquiries.
“Indeed, there is interest in him. Some of Europe’s top eight clubs have enquired about him,” Ten Hag remarked, confirming Barça’s involvement, as reported by SPORT.
Barcelona Previously Failed to Convince FC Twente
Last summer, Nijstad emerged as a prominent target for Barcelona as the club explored options to bolster its central defense. Although the Catalans made an attempt to sign him, FC Twente declined to allow his transfer, resulting in the defender staying in the Netherlands for further development.
Ten Hag expressed support for Nijstad’s choice to remain, stating, “It’s admirable that he has made a conscious decision to stay at Twente for another year. It will work out well for everyone.”
Since then, the teenager has cemented his place in Twente’s first team, and his contract, valid until 2029, gives the Dutch club a strong position for negotiations as interest in his talent grows.
Ten Hag Acknowledges Twente’s Need to Sell
While Ten Hag commended Nijstad’s decision, he also recognized the financial realities faced by Dutch clubs. To stay competitive in European football, consistent player sales are essential, and FC Twente is no exception to this trend.
“All clubs in the Netherlands have to sell players every year. To remain competitive in Europe, you need a certain budget. And to guarantee that, you simply have to sell,” he acknowledged.
Nijstad’s Valuation Could Complicate Barcelona’s Pursuit
Nijstad’s rising profile has pushed his market value beyond €20 million, and FC Twente aims to command a figure close to double that if Premier League teams show serious interest. This poses significant financial implications for Barcelona, particularly as the club is indeed seeking a new defender.
Nonetheless, Barcelona might benefit from their appealing development plan. While they cannot match the financial resources of Premier League clubs, they can offer a strong pathway for the young player’s growth.
