Everton Target £35m Defender: Should Moyes Activate His Release Clause?

Everton Maintains European Ambitions While Eyeing Defensive Reinforcements

Everton has positioned itself as a contender in the Premier League under manager David Moyes, currently holding the seventh spot after nine matches with 13 points. The Toffees’ record of three wins, four draws, and two defeats keeps them firmly engaged in the European conversation, bolstered by recent back-to-back victories against Newcastle United as well as securing a spot in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Continuing this positive trajectory will necessitate bolstering their defensive lineup, especially considering the load on current players. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who joined during the summer to add experienced defensive support, has become a key option at right-back, with his contract extending until June 2029. Jake O’Brien also provides an alternative through 2028, while Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski are both signed through to 2030. In contrast, Michael Keane’s deal expires in June 2027.

Keane’s contract situation prompts Everton to contemplate future defensive planning. Moyes values defenders who exhibit physical intensity, maintain their positions effectively, and can adapt between a traditional four-man defense and a three-man setup. Introducing a younger player with these attributes could alleviate the pressure on more seasoned players while preserving the existing formation.

Sport Witness recently reported that Everton, along with Newcastle United and Fulham, expressed interest in Celta Vigo defender Javi Rodríguez in August, while Bournemouth also entered the fray. The 23-year-old Spaniard offers the versatility that Moyes values, capable of playing as a right-back or within a defensive trio.

Rodríguez has delivered impressive performances, recording three goals and one assist in his first 10 competitive outings for the 2026/27 season, blending offensive contributions with his defensive duties. However, Celta Vigo has tied him down until June 2030 and has stated their unwillingness to sell key players in January. The only viable method for Everton to secure his services would be triggering his £35m release clause, despite Rodríguez himself expressing a desire to stay with Celta Vigo.

Should Everton Trigger Rodríguez’s £35m Clause in January?

Despite the allure of Rodríguez’s skill set and versatility, Everton should be cautious about making a move. With Keane’s contract nearing its conclusion, Rodríguez appears to be a compelling long-term option. Nonetheless, investing £35m in a player who prefers to remain in Spain could impose unwarranted financial strain due to the Squad Cost Ratio regulations.

The Friedkin Group must focus on safeguarding the advancements achieved under Moyes instead of risking squad cohesion for a potentially costly January transfer. With Maitland-Niles and Tarkowski ready to address present needs, Everton can afford to explore Rodríguez’s acquisition during the summer transfer window.
