During an appearance on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast with Dave Davis, Lynch emphasized Nyoni’s impressive passing skills, defensive awareness, and increasing influence on the team’s performance.
“Yeah, superb,” Lynch responded when discussing the teenager’s contribution in Istanbul.
Despite Liverpool’s loss, Nyoni stood out as one of the leading players, with Davis noting that the midfielder bore considerable responsibility in the central area of the pitch.

Davis pointed out several impressive statistics from Nyoni’s outing, which included 83 completed passes, nine recoveries, and three interceptions—all the highest recorded by a Liverpool player in this match.

A notable statistic from OptaJoe revealed that Nyoni managed to complete 92 percent of his passes under high-pressure situations in the Champions League, outperformed only by Barcelona’s Pedri.
“I honestly felt at times he was almost playing on his own in midfield,” Davis admitted.
Lynch echoed Davis’s sentiments, highlighting Nyoni’s role in advancing Liverpool’s attacks.
“I think he absolutely dominates anybody from either team in terms of line-breaking passes and passes into the final third,” he stated.
He added, “He gets Liverpool into more dangerous areas on a frequent basis.”

This performance has further strengthened Lynch’s belief that Liverpool may have addressed their midfield progression issues.
David Lynch Believes Trey Nyoni Can Solve Liverpool’s Ball Progression Problem
Lynch discussed Liverpool’s ongoing quest for a player capable of replicating Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ball progression skills.
“We spoke so much over the summer about one of the big worries I’ve always felt is that they’ve never replaced Trent’s ability to progress the ball,” he noted.
Nyoni’s recent performances have convinced Lynch that the solution might finally be at hand.

“I think they have now. I think this is the guy who’s going to do it for them,” he declared.
He emphasized, “It’s his superpower really in midfield.”
Moreover, the 19-year-old also netted his first senior goal for Liverpool during the match against Fenerbahce, scoring in the 25th minute with a deflected shot. This feat made him Liverpool’s second youngest Champions League goalscorer, following Alexander-Arnold.

“A few defensive contributions in there that show he’s so smart at kind of sniffing out danger,” Lynch commented.
He believes that Nyoni possesses the skills necessary to thrive in Iraola’s midfield setup.
“He’s just got kind of everything you want from someone who’s going to play in a double pivot,” he said.
However, Lynch recognized that Liverpool still faced challenges, conceding 17 shots against Fenerbahce, despite Nyoni’s commendable performance.
Furthermore, he raised concerns regarding the management of the teenager’s playing time.
“The only problem is he’s a teenager and you do not want to kind of really kind of grind him down by playing him too much,” Lynch cautioned.

Trey Nyoni’s Liverpool Future and New Contract Talks
The podcast also covered reports indicating that Liverpool is advancing discussions to extend Nyoni’s contract.
Davis expressed enthusiasm about acknowledging a player whose influence continues to grow.
Lynch supported Liverpool’s reported strategy.
“We complain when they kind of leave it too long. So them getting ahead of it is no problem at all,” he asserted.
He added, “He’s a brilliant young player. He absolutely is.”
As Liverpool prepares for a match against Crystal Palace, Lynch is confident that Nyoni has made a strong case for inclusion in the starting lineup.

“I don’t know how Iraola is going to move away from him being in the first-choice midfield because Liverpool are just not as good without him in there,” Lynch concluded.
Despite the disappointment from the match against Fenerbahce, Nyoni’s performance and his inaugural goal for Liverpool offered considerable optimism.
For Lynch, Nyoni’s significance to Liverpool is already clear.
“He’s just unbelievable in that regard.”
