Headline: Jobe Bellingham Shines in England Under-21s as He Earns Senior Call-Up
Jobe Bellingham’s football career is emerging as a reflection of his older brother Jude’s journey, featuring a similar path from Birmingham to Dortmund and a shared striking playing style. Even more impressively, Jobe has achieved what Jude has not: captaining the England Under-21s.
In September, Jobe led his team to a 4-2 victory over Kazakhstan in a qualifying match for the upcoming U21 Euros, showcasing his rapid development at just 21 years old.
“He was outstanding,” praised U21s manager Lee Carsley. “I witnessed Jobe’s progress in Dortmund a couple of weeks ago, and his development is notable. He has grown physically and showcased significant strength. His ball movement and footwork have improved immensely. The way he navigates the field, taking on opponents while leveraging his strength and balance, displays how he’s elevating his game.”
This rapid ascent earned Jobe his first call-up to the senior England squad. Thomas Tuchel highlighted that this achievement comes “on his own merit.” Both Jobe and Jude Bellingham have been selected in the 25-man squad for matches against Croatia and Spain as England approaches the Nations League quarter-finals in March.
Tuchel remarked on Jobe’s contributions, stating, “Lee is speaking very, very highly of him. He’s been a standout player in the Under-21s for quite some time, obtaining the captaincy. The pathway to success remains open for extraordinary performances over time, and Jobe has met those expectations.”
Jobe has enjoyed a solid start to the Bundesliga season with Dortmund, becoming a regular starter and influential player on the pitch. He noted the importance of making his mark independently of his brother’s legacy. “When I signed for Sunderland, it was suggested I put my name on the back of my shirt to differentiate myself. It symbolizes my journey. Some people don’t like it, but that’s their opinion.”
Both brothers debuted for Birmingham City at 16 before making the transition to Dortmund. Jude was transferred for £25 million at 17, while Jobe joined the German club for £28 million following a successful spell in Sunderland, where he was named Championship Young Player of the Season.
Despite fears of overshadowing comparisons, Jobe emphasized the importance of making sound career choices. “It’s not about being different; it’s about making the right decisions,” he said.
Growing up, the Bellingham brothers spent countless hours honing their skills, often imagining they were playing in high-stakes matches. Their father, Mark Bellingham, a former non-league striker, instilled in them the values of hard work and dedication, which continue to shine through in their professional careers. Notably, Mark recently made headlines by scoring seven goals on his debut for the England Over-50s Veterans team.
While the brothers share similarities as talented midfielders, they also exhibit distinct styles. Jude excels in advanced attacking roles, while Jobe operates as a box-to-box midfielder with adept game awareness.
In the face of his rising stardom, Jobe remains humble, expressing a desire to focus on performance rather than personal fame. “I don’t want to be a big character off the pitch. My goal is to excel on the field, simply striving to be a top performer.”
As Jobe begins this new chapter as a senior England international, he does so with a sense of individuality, though his brother Jude remains a steadfast supporter and motivator. “His happiness means more to me than my own,” Jude recently shared, emphasizing the bond they share beyond football.
