Gavi Excluded from Spain’s November Squad Amid Competition and Limited Game Time
Gavi has been omitted from Spain’s national squad for the upcoming international fixtures in November. Coach Luis de la Fuente explained that the decision is based on intense competition for positions and Gavi’s limited playing time under Hansi Flick, rather than a lack of confidence in the young Barcelona midfielder.
This means the 22-year-old will miss the UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and England after facing difficulties in securing regular minutes with his club.

De la Fuente announced his squad on November 6, which includes as many as five Barcelona players: Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Fermin Lopez, and Lamine Yamal.
De la Fuente Outlines Gavi’s Path to Return
The Spain coach emphasized Gavi’s importance to the national team but reiterated that selections must reflect the current form and contributions of available players.
“Gavi always deserves an exception, but there are many players who could be here and aren’t. Above all, out of respect for those who are here, who are the best. We love him dearly and value him highly.

“He has to keep being himself. He knows he must keep working and developing to earn his place back here.
“It’s by no means easy, because we demand a lot and all the players are of a very high standard, but everyone has to keep improving to make it into the national team,” he added, according to SPORT.
While the message is encouraging, the decision is clear: Gavi must demonstrate his abilities through his current performances rather than lean on his established reputation.
Limited Playing Time Impacts Gavi’s Chances
Gavi’s situation reflects a broader issue; he has played only 211 minutes across seven matches with Barcelona this season, starting just twice. This lack of consistent playtime hinders his ability to gain the necessary rhythm to compete with the national team’s established midfielders.

Additionally, the competition at Barcelona has intensified with Rodri’s signing last summer, further complicating Gavi’s efforts to secure a spot in the lineup. Hansi Flick now has a wider array of midfield choices, including Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, and Fermin, leaving Gavi with fewer chances to establish his position.
Gavi’s Versatility Alone Not Enough for National Team Selection
Despite Gavi’s adaptability in various midfield roles and even in wider positions, this quality does not guarantee him a place in the Spanish national setup.

Comments from De la Fuente indicate that Gavi is not being permanently excluded from the national team. Rather, the coach has set clear expectations, emphasizing that only through consistent improvement and stronger performances at Barcelona will Gavi receive another call-up.
