Nico O’Reilly Set for Recovery After Missing England Squad Selection
Nico O’Reilly has struggled to perform at his peak this season with Manchester City. A back injury sustained during the warm-up before the team’s 1-0 victory over Coventry City in early September has hindered the England international’s progress. Last season, O’Reilly had an intense schedule, featuring in a total of 53 matches across all competitions and earning a spot on the England squad for the 2026 World Cup. However, as he entered the 2026-27 season following a hectic summer, his form has notably dipped. This has resulted in him being omitted from the England squad for the upcoming international matches, an absence that could provide a valuable opportunity for rest and recovery for both O’Reilly and Manchester City.
Manchester City’s manager, Enzo Maresca, spoke about O’Reilly’s exclusion from the England squad during a media event on Friday. He expressed that this moment presents an essential chance for O’Reilly to recuperate and return stronger after the international break. Maresca commented, “With Nico it’s quite easy. Since we started the season, between his back, if you remember before the Coventry game he’s had more problems unfortunately.”
He noted that although O’Reilly has not been at 100%, the player showed good form in the most recent match, stating, “He’s not 100% but in the last game, I really liked him and thought he played a very good game. This is what we need from Nico. We just need to keep him fit because we know how good he is and I have no doubt in the future he’ll be in the international team again.” Maresca added, “It’s what he needs – to use the break to do the right things in terms of therapy and these kind of things to be 100% after the break.”
O’Reilly’s current performance issues stem from a combination of minor injuries and a demanding match schedule. Given the significance of his role in Maresca’s squad and the frequency of matches for Manchester City, finding time for rest can be challenging. At just 21 years old, O’Reilly is still relatively inexperienced, having only completed one full season of first-team football followed by participating in a World Cup — a period that understandably takes its toll.
Now, with his non-selection for the England squad by Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming games against Croatia and Spain, O’Reilly has a unique chance to take a breather. This rare opportunity for recovery could prove beneficial for him and Manchester City moving forward. O’Reilly recently demonstrated his capabilities in Manchester City’s thrilling 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena. His performance in that match may signal a positive turn in his play, and with some time away from the pitch, O’Reilly could soon find his rhythm once again.
In summary, while missing out on international selection marks a shift for O’Reilly, it also allows him the necessary downtime to return to peak fitness, which could greatly benefit both player and club in the long run.
