Barcelona and Atletico Madrid Seek Reconciliation Ahead of La Liga Match
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are preparing to mend their relationship ahead of their La Liga clash this Sunday, according to AS. Tensions arose during the summer due to the transfer saga involving Julian Alvarez, leading both clubs to reassess their working relationship.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta will lead the club’s delegation to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the match. The club’s directors are also set to join their Atletico Madrid counterparts for a pre-match lunch, which aims to publicly demonstrate reconciliation after the summer discord.

The dispute stemmed from Barcelona’s interest in signing Alvarez during the summer transfer window. Laporta asserted that the Blaugrana acted properly by making an offer and being open to discussions regarding a transfer.

In his attempts to leave Atletico for Barcelona, Alvarez voiced a desire to pursue his dreams, although he did not specifically mention the Catalan club. Atletico Madrid maintained a firm stance against any potential sale of the Argentine striker.
Atletico’s CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, vocally criticized Barcelona on several occasions, accusing the club of a lack of honesty, ethics, and transparency in their dealings. This led to a pointed response from Barcelona’s then-acting president Rafa Yuste, who remarked that Gil Marin had crossed a line.
Relationship on the Mend
Ultimately, Barcelona shifted their focus away from Alvarez and signed Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal instead. Laporta acknowledged that Alvarez would not be joining the club.

In recent weeks, there have been indications of thawing relations, evident from a meeting between Laporta and Gil Marin at the European Football Clubs (EFC) Assembly in Copenhagen. Laporta remarked, “We saw each other and hugged. I’m sure we’ve already smoothed things over, and from now on everything is clear. He’s a fantastic man who I feel very comfortable with,” indicating a positive turn in their dealings. The upcoming lunch before the match offers another opportunity for both parties to reaffirm that the past disputes are behind them.
