Vinicius Jr. Faces Tough Competition as Real Madrid Seeks Improvement
Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr. is facing significant challenges as his starting position in the team grows increasingly uncertain. The Brazilian’s long-term suspension and a lackluster start to the season have not worked in his favor.
With the international break coming to an end, Vinicius prepares to re-enter league action only to find Yan Diomande firmly established as manager Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice on the left wing.
Analysis from Former Player on Vinicius
Former Real Madrid and Spain striker Fernando Morientes shared insights this week regarding Vinicius Jr.’s current situation and ongoing competition with Diomande.
In his remarks, Morientes candidly recognized that Vinicius is not currently playing at his usual level, indicating, “We are not looking at the best version of Vinicius at the moment, but, well, that is the reality. I think he himself has acknowledged it, hasn’t he?”
He stressed that the coaching staff must take on the role of helping Vinicius rediscover his former prime. “The responsibility of the coaching staff, without getting into the wider debate, is to try to bring back the best version of Vinicius,” he noted. He elaborated that Vinicius’s recent performances have not met the expectations for a player of his caliber, especially given his history with the club and his recent contract renewal.
Morientes ultimately emphasized the significance of the coaching staff’s efforts to reintegrate Vinicius into form without exacerbating the surrounding discussions about his performance. He also endorsed Diomande as Real Madrid’s more effective left-wing option at this time.
According to Morientes, “The reality today is that Diomande is in better form, and Real Madrid currently play better with Diomande on the left than they do with Vinicius.”
Future Outlook for Vinicius
Morientes remains optimistic about Vinicius’s potential to rebound, affirming his capabilities as a valuable team player. “I believe he is a player who can still contribute. I believe he is an important player, and I don’t think we should write him off, because players like him can be decisive when they are in top form,” he asserted.
He further elaborated that while Vinicius’s failure to exhibit his traditional strengths, like taking on defenders and scoring, makes his shortcomings more apparent, he should not be unfairly singled out. “However, I am convinced that if we look at the statistics of all those matches in which Real Madrid have played poorly or suffered defeats, we would probably find other players who have also underperformed,” Morientes concluded. “But we always focus on Vinicius because he makes for a more interesting talking point.”
