Headline: Carrick Affirms Fernandes’ Commitment as Manchester United Faces Crucial Test Against Aston Villa
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has firmly stated that captain Bruno Fernandes’ dedication to the club is “undoubted” and asserts the midfielder is performing “as good as ever.”
Fernandes found himself benched during October’s home defeat to Bournemouth after expressing criticism towards Carrick and his coaching staff following the team’s 4-1 loss in the Champions League against Como.

After being reinstated for the Premier League loss to Chelsea a week later, Fernandes scored a retaken penalty that ignited a remarkable second-half comeback for his team against Roma on Tuesday.
The Portugal international mentioned afterwards that there had been “a lot of lies” circulating about his connection with Carrick.
At 32 years old, he dismissed the idea that they had engaged in any “clear-the-air talks,” despite club sources indicating otherwise.
“I think his actions, the way he’s played and how he dealt with even retaking the penalty and frame of mind he was in for that, tells [you] everything,” Carrick remarked.

“Bruno’s as good as ever,” he added.
Carrick chose not to detail his discussions with Fernandes following the Bournemouth match but emphasized that conversations are a regular part of life at Carrington. “There are always conversations, and bits going on,” he noted. “It’s acknowledging when things are going well and what we need to improve on.”
“Sometimes it’s individually, sometimes it’s [a] group. What’s actually said in that discussion, I’ll keep that to myself, but it’s pretty clear we’ve moved in a good direction,” he stated. “Bruno’s commitment is undoubted for me in terms of what he brings to this team and this club.”

Looking ahead, club executives are expected to evaluate the managerial situation following Sunday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Carrick recognized that he is unsure of what the future holds but acknowledged that only securing one victory in the last nine games – which came against Ipswich in August – does not meet expectations. He emphasized that the win against Roma should signal the beginning of a recovery phase for the team.
“While we can be really pleased with elements of the performance on Tuesday night, we must absolutely know there is so much more to come from our team,” he noted in United’s matchday programme.
“We must be ready to show that we can back up Tuesday’s victory and begin to create the momentum to give ourselves something to build on after the international break.”

The harsh reality of United’s current standing was underscored by Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 triumph over Manchester City, indicating that Carrick’s squad will find themselves in the relegation zone during the international break if they fail to secure a win against Villa.
