Enzo Maresca Addresses Defense Concerns After Gvardiol, Guehi Injuries

Headline: Enzo Maresca Reflects on Manchester City’s 3-1 Loss to Nottingham Forest

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca may have expected strong performances from defenders Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol during Saturday’s match against Nottingham Forest. However, after a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the City Ground, Maresca faced difficult questions about his team’s readiness for a fixture he considered manageable.

Despite the manager’s assertion that both players were substituted due to injuries, their lackluster showing in the first half raised concerns. The loss marked City’s third consecutive defeat in the Premier League and extended their streak without a clean sheet to eight matches.

City had previously enjoyed a promising 3-0 victory against Liverpool at Anfield on October 11, but their recent performances deteriorated significantly, conceding 4, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, and 3 goals over just 27 days.

Reflecting on the game, Maresca commented on the team’s challenge during the first half when City struggled with intensity and failed to win key duels. He noted the team’s inability to respond effectively, resulting in a critical moment when they found themselves trailing 2-1.

In response to a question about fixture congestion affecting players’ intensity, Maresca pointed out the need to match the physical demands of the match. He criticized the team’s performance in duels and recovery of loose balls, stating that they were “not good enough” in those areas.

Maresca also addressed the errors leading to Nottingham’s goals, explaining that the first goal came from the team’s attempt to build play, while the second stemmed from losing duels in midfield and the third from a misplay near the opponent’s box.

The decision to substitute Guehi and Gvardiol at halftime was based on Guehi’s request due to injury, and Gvardiol had been dealing with minor issues throughout the week. Maresca reiterated that the team’s first-half performance was inadequate.

This marks the first instance since 2024 that City has lost three consecutive Premier League matches. When asked how to turn the situation around, Maresca acknowledged the unpredictability of football, recalling that the team had previously won seven consecutive matches before this losing streak.

Finally, he emphasized the ongoing process of understanding his players, noting that after three to four months together, both the team and he need to learn from these experiences for future improvement.
