In an impressive fourth season in Major League Soccer, Lionel Messi of Inter Miami has achieved a milestone that no other player has reached in MLS history. With the conclusion of the season on Saturday, he captured his second consecutive Golden Boot, becoming the first player ever to win this award in back-to-back seasons.
While Messi fell short of his remarkable 29 goals from the previous season, his tally of 26 in the 2026 campaign secured him the prestigious award. Throughout the year, he competed closely with FC Dallas forward Petar Musa, who ended the season with 22 goals. Sam Surridge of Nashville SC and Brian White from the Vancouver Whitecaps were the only other players to surpass 20 goals.
Dominating Stat Sheets
Messi’s impact this season was undeniable, even at the age of 39. He led the league in several categories, including goals (26), goal contributions (43), shots (183), and shots on target (76). His shot statistics were particularly impressive, as no other player came close; the next highest shots came from Milan Iloski of the Philadelphia Union with 122. Musa followed in shots on target with 52.
In addition to his scoring feats, Messi ranked second in assists, just behind Pep Biel of Charlotte FC, who recorded 18 assists.
Making History
With this achievement, Messi joins an exclusive group of just six players in MLS history to win the Golden Boot on two occasions. Others who have reached this milestone include Bradley Wright-Phillips, Chris Wondolowski, Jeff Cunningham, Taylor Twellman, and Preki. However, it is worth noting that Twellman and Preki’s Golden Boots were earned under an earlier points-based system.
Additionally, Messi is in contention for a third consecutive MVP trophy, as his performance this season makes him a strong candidate. His 26 goals rank as the second highest in the 2020s, only behind his own record from last season.
As a team, Inter Miami faced a setback in their pursuit of the Supporter’s Shield, finishing 17 points behind Nashville FC, who set a new record for points in a single season.
Looking Forward
Messi’s journey is not over yet, as Inter Miami prepares for the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will face the Columbus Crew, a team with a rich history, including three MLS Cup titles, the latest of which came in 2023.
In contrast to Inter Miami’s scoring efficiency, the Crew took a more balanced approach this season, with Brais Mendez, Diego Rossi, and Gonzalo Tapia each netting six goals to lead their squad.
At present, it remains uncertain when the series between Messi’s team and the Crew will commence, as the exact dates and times are yet to be announced. This matchup is anticipated to be a compelling series as Messi continues his journey to make history.
