Wales Pursues Raya and Pickford in Goalkeeper Search

Wales Coach Craig Bellamy Calls Up Young Goalkeeper Joe Duncan for Nations League Matches

Wales’ head coach, Craig Bellamy, has announced his squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Norway and Portugal, highlighting the inclusion of 20-year-old goalkeeper Joe Duncan. Currently on loan at Southend United from Bristol City, Duncan is one of the fresh prospects in the squad, following a path previously taken by notable goalkeepers like David Raya and Jordan Pickford.

Duncan, a former participant in Jamaica’s youth teams who earned two under-21 caps, received his first senior call-up on Wednesday. Though his rise in football has been rapid, Bellamy makes it clear that Duncan will not debut next weekend in Oslo against a formidable Norway side featuring Erling Haaland.

Given the limited goalkeeping options for Wales, Bellamy intends to evaluate potential talents for the future. “You have to start somewhere as a goalkeeper, you have to learn your trade,” he explained. He emphasized the advantages of goalkeepers emerging from lower leagues, stating, “I love watching those development goalkeepers because they ask questions of you.”

Bellamy expressed his admiration for Duncan’s performances at Southend, noting that he had not been on their radar before due to availability issues. His relationship with Southend’s manager, Kieron Dyer, who played alongside Bellamy, has also influenced this selection. “Kieron loves Duncan, and I respect his view on football. His IQ on the game is one of the best I’ve been involved with,” said Bellamy.

Bellamy’s scouting tactics differ from many of his peers, as he acknowledges the scarcity of emerging Welsh goalkeepers. During his squad announcement, he humorously described current first-choice goalkeepers Karl Darlow and Danny Ward, both in their 30s, as “old.” This comment underscored the serious concern about the future of Wales’ goalkeeping situation.

With other options like Everton’s Tom King and Sheffield United’s Adam Davies not regularly playing, Bellamy recognizes the need to explore beyond the usual ranks. Reflecting on the difference between his situation and that of England’s coach Thomas Tuchel, who has to decide between established options like Pickford and rising talents such as James Trafford, Bellamy acknowledged the challenges he faces.

He remarked, “You’ve got to earn your stripes,” referencing the journey of Trafford, who proved himself through loans before making a significant transfer. With Wales lacking depth in goalkeeping talent, Bellamy’s proactive approach includes scouring lower leagues for potential first-team candidates, showcasing his commitment to building a sustainable future for the national team.

As Duncan and other young goalkeepers seek to carve their paths, they can look to the success stories of players like Raya, Pickford, and Trafford as inspiration for climbing the ranks in football.
