Manchester City Suffers Third Consecutive League Defeat After Strong Start
Manchester City faced a disappointing defeat at the City Ground, becoming the first top-flight team since Sheffield Wednesday in the 1904-05 season to lose three consecutive league matches after beginning their campaign with seven straight wins under manager Enzo Maresca. The Blues conceded early in their match against Nottingham Forest, a recurring theme in their recent losses to Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion. Maresca expressed concern over his team’s lack of intensity following the match.
The game kicked off poorly for City, as Jair Cunha capitalized on a mistake by Gvardiol just six minutes in, driving to the edge of the area to score his first goal for Nottingham Forest. Liam Delap extended the lead before halftime, capitalizing on a mix-up between Iliman Ndiaye and Elliot Anderson, allowing him to run from the center circle and score with a powerful strike into the top corner.
Manchester City managed to pull one back shortly after the restart, with Rayan Cherki scoring from the edge of the area. However, Delap sealed Nottingham’s victory in the 73rd minute with a goal assisted by Morgan Gibbs-White, leaving City six points behind league leaders Arsenal ahead of the international break.
In his post-match press conference, Maresca addressed the decision to substitute Gvardiol and Guehi at halftime due to injuries. “Both injury, both asked for change. Marc Guehi injury and Josko Gvardiol had some issues already during the week. So it was just because they had problems,” he explained. Matheus Nunes took Guehi’s place, while Nico O’Reilly replaced Gvardiol, despite previous concerns raised regarding the latter’s fitness.
Gvardiol had been an unused substitute during City’s 3-2 UEFA Champions League victory over RB Leipzig the preceding week. City prepared to face several crucial matches, including a clash with Fulham at Etihad Stadium on November 21, hosting Napoli in the Champions League three days later, and traveling to Arsenal on November 29. All this occurs against the backdrop of the independent commission’s guilty verdict and subsequent appeal lodged by the club.
