Spain Edges Past Belgium in World Cup Quarterfinal Thriller

In a live episode of The Cooligans, hosts Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros broadcast from Miami to review Spain’s 2-1 victory over Belgium in the World Cup quarterfinals. The pair breaks down a game defined by a cautious start that transitioned into a high-energy second half. They examine Belgium’s defensive efforts and Charles De Ketelaere’s header that ended Spain’s clean-sheet run, as well as the exit of Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois due to a gluteal injury.

The hosts discuss the impact of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, who entered the match and scored the winning goal just three minutes later. The episode covers the fallout of the match, including the international retirement of Kevin De Bruyne. In a “Stock Up” and “Stock Down” segment, the hosts evaluate Lamine Yamal’s performance against double-teams, the struggles of goalkeeper Unai Simón, and a lackluster performance from Jeremy Doku. Guerreros also uses Belgium’s performance to discuss structural issues and developmental challenges within U.S. Soccer.

Looking toward the next round, the hosts preview the semifinal match between Spain and France. They also discuss other quarterfinal fixtures, including whether Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard can break down England’s injury-hit defense, and the tactical battle expected between Switzerland—featuring Granit Xhaka and Ruben Vargas—and Argentina.
