Jude Bellingham’s Resurgence Powers England’s World Cup Campaign

The Jude Bellingham show is back in town. The Real Madrid midfielder is delivering a World Cup performance that ranks among the most mesmerizing displays by an England player in recent major tournaments, even by his own lofty standards.

It seems ludicrous now that anyone questioned whether Bellingham belonged in England’s World Cup squad at all. He has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout stars during England’s march to the quarter-finals. Four goals and an excellent assist for Harry Kane in the 2-0 victory over Panama have seen supporters in the USA serenading the 23-year-old.

Bellingham appears to be taking it all in his stride. His rise to the top was predicted by those in the game when he first burst onto the scene in 2019.

Bellingham stunned the scouts from his debut

Bellingham made his debut for hometown club Birmingham City in August 2019 at 16 years and 38 days old. He became the club’s youngest-ever player, breaking the record set by legend Trevor Francis in 1970.

A Premier League scouting report from that match highlighted his “great athleticism, long legs, graceful running and work-rate.” The scout specifically noted his technical ability to carry the ball away from pressure and find space between the lines. The report recommended that the club sign him immediately, loan him out, and integrate him into the senior squad within 18 months.

Within a year, Bellingham moved to Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £20.7m. Birmingham retired his number 22 shirt after just 44 appearances. He quickly proved his worth in Germany, where he scored on his debut in the German Cup.

    Fast-track to senior international squad

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate fast-tracked Bellingham into the senior squad at age 17. He made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Republic of Ireland in November 2020. Southgate managed his early development carefully, limiting his minutes at Euro 2020, while assistant Steve Holland worked closely with him on the defensive aspects of his game.

By the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he was undeniable. His header in the 6-2 win over Iran marked his first senior goal; he has added nine more since.

The emergence of the Real Madrid Galactico

At Euro 2024, Bellingham was a Real Madrid player for almost a year. His massive profile brought scrutiny, including questions over his media duties and his decision to isolate after the Euro 2024 final.

However, his on-pitch impact remained clear. His overhead kick equaliser against Slovakia became one of the tournament’s defining images.

    The pre-tournament selection questions

Following off-the-field turmoil at the club and injuries at Real Madrid, Bellingham faced uncertainty under England boss Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel sparked controversy after reportedly describing some of Bellingham’s behavior as “repulsive,” though he later apologised for his word choice.

By June, Tuchel noted that Bellingham had a fight on his hands to feature in England’s starting line-up.

Bellingham has matured in front of the world

Bellingham answered those questions with his play on the pitch. After an impressive solo goal against Croatia and a crucial strike against Panama, his two-goal performance in the win over Mexico confirmed his return to top form.

In post-match interviews, the midfielder has shown maturity and humility, focusing on the team’s collective work ethic rather than his own profile. Now a key part of the leadership group, he has adapted to tactical shifts, moving between roles as required. Regardless of the internal dynamics with his manager, Bellingham has been a driving force for a unified England squad, leaving him well-positioned to chase further success in Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway.
