Spain Clinches 2026 World Cup Title After Memorable Tournament

The 2026 World Cup has concluded with Spain emerging as champions. In a detailed follow-up piece, I reflect on my personal memories and experiences from this summer’s tournament, highlighting how the World Cup is not just about the football but also the stories and memories created.

As I noted in my previous writing, the World Cup spans more than just the five weeks of football; it represents lasting memories that can be shared for years to come.

This second reflection explores my experience and journey through Paraguay, a nation I developed a fondness for, all thanks to football.

Although we must wait another four years for the next Men’s World Cup, the unforgettable memories and stories from this extraordinary tournament will resonate long after the celebrations have faded.

    The Wait Is Finally Over

In the weeks leading up to the tournament, my thoughts were entirely consumed by football. As the tournament approached, every week felt slower, filled with anticipation as I envisioned the matches ahead. Just two weeks before, while walking to a five-a-side game, I couldn’t help but think about how eager I was for the World Cup to kick off.

The weather was unusually pleasant for the UK, which only added to my excitement. I found myself overthinking and eagerly anticipating the starting whistle.

This tournament was the first summer World Cup since 2018, and it brought back a wave of nostalgia. With three host nations—Mexico, the US, and Canada—along with 48 teams competing, this tournament promised more games and more football, allowing us to witness thrilling matchups from lesser-known nations.

On the tournament’s opening Thursday, I was at the local pub with my parents, sharing a beer as we eagerly watched the opening ceremony and pre-match coverage. The excitement was palpable.

On my way home, I picked up some Panini World Cup stickers, a tradition I hold dear, which added to my anticipation. Opening the packs before the match, I was thrilled to find a rare gold sticker of Lionel Messi that I later sold for £88.

The opening match between Mexico and South Africa was filled with suspense. I was particularly interested in the new format for the national anthems performed around the semicircle, which I found to enhance the atmosphere. Mexico emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, thanks to goals from Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones, in a game that featured two red cards for South Africa and another for César Montes of Mexico.

Despite criticisms about the late kick-off times in Europe, I welcomed the change. Although it meant I faced exhaustion the next day, I managed to catch the highlights of South Korea’s 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic while avoiding any spoilers.

The second day continued the thrill with Canada’s 1-1 draw against Bosnia. Odd as it may seem, I enjoyed the camaraderie of fans gathering to watch unpredictable matches. I followed my local cricket club’s T20 match before tuning in late at night for Paraguay’s match against the United States, where Paraguay was soundly defeated 4-1.

Days blurred together after the group stage, which felt distant but was filled with excitement, even with 48 teams in play. I think it worked well. The head-to-head record made sense but also dampened some excitement—imagine the drama if goal difference had influenced the matches.

Sweden stunned everyone with a 5-1 win against Tunisia, before facing a similar fate with a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands. Coming home one evening, I discovered that Spain was drawing 0-0 with Cape Verde. Watching the second half, I was amazed by Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, who put up a formidable defense against a seasoned Spanish team. Such moments define the World Cup.

This tournament was also marked by the magic of Messi as Argentina triumphed over Algeria in their opening match. I joined friends in watching England conquer Croatia in a thrilling 4-2 match, where England delivered a strong second-half performance against a team that had reached the semi-finals in the last two tournaments.

Canada had an impressive 6-0 win against Qatar. However, it was hard to miss the unfortunate injury to Ismaël Koné, who had been a standout throughout the tournament. Drawing from my experiences in South America, I watched Brazil secure a 3-0 victory against Haiti, who had previously lost to Scotland. Observing Haiti’s dynamic style was refreshing.

Paraguay managed to rebound from earlier struggles, earning a 1-0 win against Turkey in a match I initially decided to skip in favor of sleep. Their performance showcased true Paraguayan spirit. Fans expressed both anger at the referee and pride in the win.

One notable match featured France facing Iraq, which was delayed due to thunderstorms but ended in a win for the French. I watched England’s narrow victory over DR Congo in a pub, filled with tension after an early goal by DR Congo. However, Harry Kane’s equalizer quelled the nerves.

Late-night matches involved Senegal racing to a 2-0 lead over Belgium, ultimately leading to a disappointing draw in a match they controlled until the end.

The excitement continued as I watched Portugal secure a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. The group stage ended with my delayed viewing of Panama against England, which saw England win comfortably 2-0.

    The World Cup Comes Alive

The knockout stages saw Canada beat South Africa in a gripping finish, thanks to a stoppage-time winner. One of the tournament’s highlights was Germany’s clash with Paraguay, where Paraguay executed a tactical defensive game plan. After scoring early, they held defensive ground, ultimately winning in a penalty shootout.

Brazil managed to eleminate Japan after a shaky start, while England narrowly defeated DR Congo after an inspiring goal from Harry Kane. I was also engaged in a pub quiz nearby during Senegal’s match, which attracted my attention as Belgium overturned a losing position to win.

The quarter-finals brought more thrilling action. England faced Norway again, employing a dramatic strategy which ended with England narrowly securing a 2-1 victory.

Spain’s superior performance against Belgium solidified their reputation as serious contenders. I had previously predicted that Spain would take home the trophy, and they continued to confirm my expectations.

In the semi-finals, Spain overcame France while England faced a tough fight against Argentina. After taking an early lead, England fell victim to Argentina’s strategic play, resulting in a heart-wrenching defeat.

    More Than Football

The match against Argentina brought out strong sentiments from England fans, reminding many of the historical tensions between the nations. However, my experiences in Argentina showed a different side—the warm hospitality of its people, who welcomed me with open arms during my visit.

Despite the competitive fierce nature of football, my encounters in Argentina proved that kindness and friendship thrive off the pitch. I found that the World Cup can sometimes obscure the real character of nations.

In a remarkable show, England faced France in a wild affair ending in a 6-4 victory for the Three Lions, marking one of their finest finishes since 1966. My anticipation rose for the final, an awaited match between the resilience of Argentina and the strength of Spain. Following an intense game, Spain emerged victorious through Ferran Torres’s goal in extra time.

After an extraordinary summer filled with football, the memories will stay with us until the next tournament. The vibrant atmosphere and camaraderie brought a unique flair to the World Cup, and we look forward to the next installment in four years, with a Women’s World Cup in Brazil ahead.
