Chelsea Faces Challenge in Pursuit of Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria
Chelsea has been informed that Rayo Vallecano will only entertain the sale of full-back Pep Chavarria if his release clause, valued at £42.4 million, is met.
The Blues initially thought they had a pathway to securing the player, but their opening bid of £15 million was swiftly rejected. Chelsea has indicated they are willing to raise their offer to £21.2 million; however, this figure still falls significantly short of Rayo’s expectations.
Sources from BBC Sport describe the ongoing discussions as “complicated” after Rayo insisted on the full payment of the release clause. Despite the difficulties, negotiations are still in progress.
Rayo stands firm on their asking price, arguing that Chavarria, who is 28 years old, possesses statistics comparable to Marc Cucurella, the player Chelsea recently sold to Real Madrid for £51.8 million. Club officials believe that Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is particularly interested in Chavarria following his standout performance against Real Madrid last November.
Moreover, Chavarria is under contract for another four years, and Rayo’s effective player-trading model has placed them in a strong financial position, enabling the club to withstand offers much like Spain’s major clubs—Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid.
Additionally, any profit from a potential sale would incur a 25% tax charge, further affecting the net revenue from the transfer.
However, Chelsea does possess a notable point of leverage, as Chavarria is keen on making the move. Alonso is looking to expand his squad following the addition of Marco Palestra, who plays on the right flank. Signing Chavarria would offer a similar dynamic on the left, allowing the head coach to utilize wing-backs in a system mirroring his successful approach at Bayer Leverkusen.
